What`s happened?             Project           How to help?             News       Account for money

Who we are?
Bruno Schenk - Ambulance driver with the Red Cross and Maria Schenk - RN Nurse from Schrobenhausen, Bavaria,Germany.
We have been in Sri Lanka already several times and started to know and love the country and its people.
During December 2004, it was the first time that our whole family spent our vacations there together (Bruno-my husband,Maria-myself and our 3 children ). We were in the town of Waikkala, about 10 km (6 miles) north of Negombo on the westside of the island. On Dec. 26 we experienced the tsunami of East Asia and thanks to the selfless help of the local people, survived.

What happened on Dec. 26?

beach to the south- before... ...and beginning the Tsunami

During this whole ordeal, we have not been alone, somebody always was at our side and everybody was taken to safety. For the next two days we were taken in by a family of the village there. We'd been given food and clothes, since we were not allowed to return to our hotel close to the beach. My body was full of bruises and my husband had open wounds and was taken to a doctor.Thank God, nobody got sereously hurt.

A few days later, our host, Mr. Dabarera left with two small trucks loaded with food, aquired from donations from vacationers and locals to head south to help the people there. He was accompanied by my husband and other german and swiss vacationers. In Waikkala itself (where we were) the destruction was not as horrible as elsewhere since the beach there was not densely built on.Even so, the deathtoll was 10 people in this small community.

The tsunami hit the whole coastline of Sri Lanka and there will be help needed for a long time to conce.

The project

Plan of one house
This house was planed for 18-20 children

Where ? in Dankotuwa Sri Lanka, about 10 km north of Negombo.
What ? Planed are houses for 16-20 children and 2 caretaker each..
In every house will be a big living room,2 bathrooms and toiletts.
To built this project, we need ca. 100.000 Euro.
We also plan several follow up projects which will be designed to be self supportive to the childrens home. We want to help arrange adoptions of the children by local families.
In time we plan on adding a daycare center, to give single parents the possibility of making a job, while their children are taking care of.

We are looking for donations and sponsors. How can you help?

Sponsor a child
Sponsorship for one child at 40,- Euro per month, starting, with the first house being orerational.
This money will be used for food, clothing and education for one child, possibly a fond to help start a life on one's own.
Sponsorship for a child should possibly last untill this child leaves the home. You also can sponsor a child in this family
Projektsponsorship
with at least 5,- Euro per month you can sponsor this projekt right now. We will use this money to built and maintain the houses and to assure the future of this project, by developing an environement that will enable us to be self-efficient as much as possible.

Mrs. Schenk visited the new well
By keeping the monthly sponsorship low we hope to find enough people who are willing and able to support our childrens home. These projectsponsorships can be terminated at any time
If you are interested in giving your donation, or sponsor a child, or sponsor the projekt, or if you have any questions, please contact us

Right after we returned home we contacted different care organisations and government offices.
Lots of the organisations have the goodwill to cooperate,
but because of the guidelines and rules it is quite difficult to work something out,
in some cases even, it's not possible. This is the reason we started the project already on our own initiative.

News:

We buy land to built the houses about 8 km away from the sea. There are many palm trees on the ground. We hope, we get some money, to built the house for the children as soon as possible. Today, there lived a family. This family be saved by the tsunami. Mow, they live in Dankotuwa und want to help by working.

The new house for Fam. Warnakoolasuryia.
