Where is the Adventure? By RM As a society maintained by social relationsips based off domination continues to expand, adventure becomes nothing more than another commodity from which we can pick and choose. Rather than being the anti-thesis of the state, the adventure espoused by capital, as many people understand it within our current continually restrictive existance, helps reproduce and continue the very institutionsin which true adventure can never be realized. Capital which restrics, limits, and defines cannot tolerate wildness or imagination which come into conflict with its system; so it must control and commodify all that is unruly while at the same time give the appearance that capital is encouraging imagination and creativity. Amusement parks are one example. We are free to act like a child again, to let our imaginations run wild as long as we pay our money and do as we are told while we are corralled like cattle in ling crowded lines and ride machines with very little actual danger or true adventure involved. The adventure capital encourages is the illusion of adventure. It is the commodification of adventure in which it has twisted it for its own use. But ofcourse life is much more thatn capital would have us think. True adventure cannot be given to us by those who rule the present system. It is not staring at a large screen periodically having ones emotions evoked due to representations and exaggerations of life with glamour by a Hollywood director in which everyone who sees the same movie gets the same response, or the controlled clicking and button pressing of a video game, nor is it even living on the streets 'outcasted' from society with others in a seperate subculture with it's own capitalist social relationships. Adventure as I see it, does not involve consuming what some boardroom CEO's had created to make themselves richer, but living ones life as they truly desire; and doing so can only come about with the destruction of capital and all its institutions of oppression that continue its social relationships. The present social order maintains its control precisely because it curtails our capacity to dream. We are too busy and distracted settling for crumbs. Our energy is channeled into surviving and trying to make ones life a little better for ones self rather than attempting to live our lives as we truly wish. It is therefore, somewhat understandable for those living in such situations that they would choose the present system over revolution because of the work or starve standards many people have had imposed on them in their lives. This can be seen by those who are exploited by the present society but who are for the present system to the extent they feel the need to defend it and side with the police whenever the system is (if only symbolically) threatened. Much like religion, which promises a better life far in the future- a future life which can only be given by god/s goddess/goddesses above, such people continue to work and sell themselves to exploitation, to climb the ladder for a better future which will be given to them by their bosses. Of course few ever make it, but it is the fact that they are trying and so are too distracted and busy to attempt to live their lives as they see fit which is critical to the continuance of capital. The state needs a constantly hungry and desperate people brainwashed by constant lies by the ruling class precisely because it cannot allow the possibility of a creative rebellious population. And as I see it, it is precisely because the state takes such extreme measures that the system of capital is vulnerable. It is only through the act of attacking the present system in open rebellion exposing its weaknesses and smashing its invulnerable illusion in the desire to live ones lives as they see fit which can ignite the passions of the majority of the exploited which can channel their energies to the destruction of the present system in its entirety so as to live each of their lives as their own true adventure. |
