EXPLANATORY
In this book a number of dialects are
used, to wit: the Missouri Negro dialect;
The extremest form of the backwoods
South-Western dialect; the ordinary 'Pike-
County' dialect; and four modified varie-
ties of this last. The shadings have not
been done in a haphazard fashion, or by
guess-work; but painstakingly, and with
the trustworthy guidance and support of
personal familiarity with theses several
forms of speech.
I make this explanation for the reason
that without it many readers would sup-
pose that all these charachters were trying
to talk alike and not succeeding.
THE AUTHOR

Esta "Explicación" introduce el libro 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' ('Las aventuras de Huckleberry Finn'). Este trabajo es un intento de ir elaborando un diccionario o glosario de palabras y expresiones que aparecen en el relato. Es un inglés arcaico y muy local, difícil de entender muchas veces y que no figura en cualquier diccionario, pero muy divertido e interesante y que no creo que te vayan a enseñar en tu academia favorita.

Muchas palabras que aparecen aquí pertenecen a esos dialectos y otras, seguramente, se pueden incluir en un inglés más convencional. Esto es así porque, puestos a buscar palabras en el diccionario, he optado por buscar todo aquello que desconozco o cuyo significado nunca había tratado de conocer con precisión.

Aquí están los capítulos que he trabajado hasta ahora. Son pocos al principio. La tarea es lenta pero va avanzando. Paciencia, pues.

Hay algunos signos en las páginas siguientes:

Las palabras y expresiones con un punto rojo a la izquierda son las que no tenemos muy claras y en ocasiones nada claras.
Las que tienen la sonrisa amarilla son las que han recibido ayuda externa. Serán bienvenidas todas las sugerencias (preferentemente bien documentadas, gracias).

He usado los diccionarios siguientes:

The Collins English Dictionary, una edición de 1985, desde ahora Collins;
The Slang Thesaurus de Jonathon Green, una edición de 1986 en Penguin Books, desde ahora STh.;
En casos donde lo mejor era buscar el nombre exacto de algo, como un accidente geográfico, fueron de gran ayuda The Bantam New College Spanish & English Dictionary (desde ahora Bantam. Es de 1971, pequeñito, pero bien buenísimo) y The Oxford Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary (1990, desde ahora, Oxford Duden).
Desde febrero de 2004, con el capítulo 16 casi terminado, llega a mis manos un Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, Tenth Edition, 1994 (desde ahora, M. Webster's), propiedad de un buen amigo que no consigue embutirlo en su exiguo equipaje camino de Brasil. Resulta que es un magnífico diccionario, pero que además incorpora ejemplos para ilustrar algunas palabras que hasta ese momento habían sido imposibles de encontrar con pasajes del propio 'Huckleberry Finn'.
Desde febrero de 2003 (capítulo 12 y siguientes, aunque con los repasos futuros pueden aparecer en capítulos anteriores) he añadido algunos diccionarios que existen en Internet y que recomiendo:

http://www.yourdictionary.com, y dentro de éste, una versión del Dictionary of Americanisms de John Russell Bartlett, (desde ahora Bartlett) del año 1848.

http://www.hyperdictionary.com

en el que he encontrado algunas acepciones que no están en otr lugar.

Y, por fin, algunos términos náuticos y nombres de barcos salen de www.northstar.k12.ak.us (desde ahora Glosario Northstar).

También he echado mano del Diccionario de la Lengua Española de la Real Academia Española, en su vigésima primera edición,1992 (RAE).

Pido disculpas por los errores y erratas que puedan aparecer en las páginas que siguen. Los capítulos son actualizados constantemente y corrijo lo que veo que está mal. Para sugerir correcciones (o lo que sea) se puede escribir aquí.

For some time I have been reading Mark Twain's "The adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and was really fascinated by the way those characters spoke, mainly for two reasons: I couldn't make out a single word of what they were saying and at the same time was highly interested and amused by the way they were saying it, something I'm not sure if you, native english speakers, can understand but that's the way it is, I just wanted to go out there and say "hifalut'n" and "by and by" and "You think you're a good deal of a big-bug, don't you?" So I grabbed my dictionaries and started looking for all those words. Later I thought putting it on the net would be a good way to hang on to this work, which surely is going to be a long one. Who knows, it can be even turn out to be useful to someone.

Here are those chapters I've already worked out.
A few at the beginning but is a long task, so be patient.

The red point means the word or phrase need a review. For some of them, I have no idea what they are talking about.
The yellow smiley means I have received assistance from visitors of the site. Help and suggestions are welcome.

Dictionaries I've been using:

The Collins English Dictionary, a 1985 edition (from now on, Collins);
Jonathon Green's The Slang Thesaurus, a 1986 Penguin edition;
When an accurate translation was needed (the name of an object, for instance) The Bantam New College Spanish & English Dictionary (1971, a tiny one but very good) and The Oxford Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary (1990) were useful. Here are the results.
February 2004: A very good friend of mine, on his way to Brazil, leaves behind a Merriam Webster's Dictionary, Tenth Edition, 1994 (M. Webster's from now on). It happens to be an excellent dictionary, with words and expressions I hadn't been able to find in other sources. But also, some of the examples it uses to illustrate definitions are taken from 'Huckleberry Finn' itself.
Since February 2003 (Chapter 13th and on, though I may use them in the first ones as I check them in the future) I started to use som on-line dictionaries:
