First published in monthly parts during 1849/50 it is one of Dickens' great books, written when
he was at the height of his powers. He wrote of it "It would concern the reader little, perhaps,
to know how sorrowfully he pen is laid down at the close of a two-year imaginative task....
Of all my books I like this best...
But like many fond parents I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child, and his name is David
Copperfield " It has sometimes been called Dickens' autobiography.
He wrote most of it a- Bleak House (The Fort) Broadstairs and the original Betsey Trotwood is
said to have lived in what is now the Dickens House Museum, Broadstairs, Kent.
