The story of John F

The story of John F. Moore and Elizabeth Hodnett.

John F. Moore married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hodnett, 24 Aug 1852 in West Point, Long Cane Community,Troup Co. GA. The marriage was performed by Hiram Dennis, Justice of the Peace. Marriage Lic. Book D, pg. 3.

John and Elizabeth made their home on land near Elizabeth’s parents,William Collier Hodnett and Caroline Finley. Proven on the 1860 Census of Troup County GA. On the 1860 Census is ‘Sabinah’ Moore, (I believe this is Sabrina Chambliss Moore)born ca 1810 in Georgia, living with John F. Moore. Presumed his mother. Sabrina Chambliss married Franklin Moore, on 14 Dec 1828 in Jones County, Georgia.

Sabrina Chambliss b. ca 1810 married Franklin B. Moore Dec 1828 in Jones Co. GA.  I have linked several possible connections between families from Jones Co. GA families and Troup Co. GA. There appears a migratory pattern from Jones Co. to Troup Co of Hodnett, Moore, Chambliss, and Oliver. Moreover, further research shows a migratory pattern from Darlington SC to Jones Co. GA. I find Franklin B. Moore (Age 20-30) on 1830 Census of Troup Co. GA living in the residence next to William Chambliss b. ca 1780-1785.  This William Chambliss appears to be the right age 55-66 years old, as possible parent for parent of Sabrina Chambliss.  There appears to be no other Chambliss family in Troup Co. in 1830. I do not find church records, Cemetery records or Will records that indicate information about this William Chambliss or Sabrina Chambliss Moore in Troup. Co. GA or Jones Co. GA. confirmation and additional information is necessary. In researching Jones Co. GA I find more Chambliss females married in Jones Co. GA. 1810-1830 than males to carry the Chambliss name so additional research of these Chamliss women may lead to the connections and confirmations we need. Help me to confirm or provide additional information.

Elizabeth’s father, William Collier Hodnett, held several land bounties in Troup County Georgia, Chambers County Alabama and in Arkansas in 1855. John was a farmer and either farmed family land near the Hodnetts or farmed with Elizabeth’s brothers on Hodnett land. This is furthered by the two Moore children(presumed to be children of John F. Moore and Elizabeth Hodnett) buried in the Hodnett Cemetery in Troup Co. GA with Elizabeth's parents,William Collier Hodnett and Caroline Finley. John F. Moore left his young wife and young children to join the Confederate forces soon after the War began. Elizabeth’s brothers George Troup ‘Tip’ Hodnett, James Madison Hodnett, Samuel Graham Hodnett, Thomas Jefferson Hodnett and John Wesley Hodnett all served in the War. The collection of Hodnett family letters mention John F. Moore and Elizabeth as well as Joe M. Moore. In at least one letter John F. Moore corresponded with Elizabeth at the end of a letter written by John Wesley Hodnett.

J. M. ‘Joe’ (?Joseph) Moore mustered out in Co. K 13 GA Infantry in 8 July 1861 and surrendered at Appomatox, 9 April 1865. John Wesley Hodnett, Elizabeth’s brother mustered out as Private 8 July 1861 Evans Guards Co. K 13th Regiment Georgia Infantry). In a letter of 1 Oct 1862 from John Wesley Hodnett writes that John (Moore) has been wounded....Joe has caught up to Company K and his arm is well. John and Joe Moore are mentioned in a several other Hodnett letters. This information came to me by Marie Ann Cantlin.

George Troup Hodnett was married 15 Nov 1846 to Mary Jane Moore, sister to John F.Moore.  Mary Jane Moore born 25/29 Nov 1829 GA. Died 15/16 Feb 1924 in Alexander City. There were 8 children by the George’s death at Hamilton’s Crossing, VA on 8 April 1863.

John F Moore born Oct 1828/1829 (depending on documentation used)in GA., enlisted in Co K (The Evans Guards) of the 13th GA infantry at LaGrange, Troup Co. Georgia, 21 August 1862, however the Hodnett letters indicate he was already in service in another company, this is affirmed by the comment in his Pension Application stating he was mustered in 1861 at West Point, GA. Based on his brother’s enlistment and Elizabeth’s brothers enlistment in 1861 this is most plausible.) Additional research needed to confirm all service of John F. Moore.

He's listed in Lillian Henderson's Roster of Georgia's Confederate Soldiers as being in a company of the 13th which was recruited in Troup County. He was wounded in action at Antietam, the battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland,17 September 1862 and sent home on wounded furlough from 5 October 1862 until he returned 12 February 1863. He is hospitalized at Richmond hospital in June and July of 1864 being treated for chronic dysentry. He is "present" with his regiment, Co. K on the rolls through February of 1865. He is captured at Danville, Va 6 April 1865 and imprisoned at Point Lookout until he takes his Oath of Allegiance and goes home 29 June 1865. His Oath states he is light complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes and 6 ft 1/2 inch tall.

PENSION APPLICATION: filed by J F Moore on 7 Jul 1901, shows 80 acres in Chambers Co. AL value $240.00. Confirms military service as a private in the 13th GA Infantry, Co K mustered in 1861, at West Point Georgia. Discharged April 1865. (I found no other possible J F Moore in company K),(However, The pension application poses a discrepancy between Military record of Georgia indicating he was taken prisoner in April 1865 and released 29 June 1865). However both pension and military record indicate he was “wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg, MD. and is suffering from Acid Consumption.” He lists his age as 70 years. (This is a discrepancy in the noted transcription date on the 1900 Census, Oct 1828, however, his is age recorded on the application could be in error), living near Wise, AL. He did sign his application. Further confirmation of John F. Moore as we have documentation that he could write in the letters preserved during the War.) R J Moore and W D Gaines, MD from Board of Pension Executors, Chambers County, also signed a statement of health.(Note: unknown if R J Moore is a relation)

(Al?bessie, Best spelling from 1900 Census) "Bessie" Moore applied for a CW Widows Pension July 5, 1905. She was unable to sign her name. There was no property. This is further confirmation that "Bessie" is not the Elizabeth Hodnett known as Lizzie and wife of John F. Moore, but, instead a second wife. Elizabeth Hodnett could read and write as confirmed by correspondence between her and her brothers and John F. Moore. No marriage record has been located for John F. Moore and Bessie, however, the 1900 Census for Chambers Co. AL 26 June 1900, enu district 4-- Precinct 3--sheet 15, page 109, indicates that John F. Moore has been married twice the first time 30 years and as of Census date married 16 years to second wife A_bessie, making Marriage date 1884.This further confirms the marriage of Elizabeth Hodnett to John F. Moore being married 30 years at her death in 1883.

John F. and Elizabeth MOORE moved from  Troup County, Georgia  to Ripville Mill, about 1875, Minnie L. Moore was born in 1876 in Chambers County Alabama.

Curiosity quiz

Joel Chandler Harris and Paulena Moore sold to MW Oliver 200 acres in Cass Co Tx Aug 1917.  The interesting part is that this land sale was over a  family scabble in part because Joel C. and Paulena had taken payment from their son Alonzo “Lon” and then sold the land.  This caused an irreparable harm and division between Lon, Julia, Susie and John Thomas and their parents.  Because of the closeness of proximity of the Oliver family in the migratory patterns of the Moore family from SC to Jones Co. GA to Troup Co. GA and on to AL and to Cass Co. TX.  I am curious if this land scabble was inclusive of inheritance involving the Moore and Oliver families. More to the Point is that William H. Oliver married  Nancy Simmons 21 Dec 1828 in Jones Co. GA recorded about the same time as Sabrina Chambliss and Franklin Moore.
