This is one of Dave's favorite creatures. We have seen
several in Florida since we moved here in 1998.
"Borne aloft on wings spanning seven feet, soaring into the furthest reaches
of blue, the bald eagle captures the American sky. It is difficult to
believe that this majestic bird faced extinction not so long ago. But
concerned Americans got involved and the the bald eagle is again at home
across much of the U.S."
"The uplifting message of the bald eagle's return is that we can rescue
endangered species. May the eagle's strength, grace, and tenacity inspire
us to make the effort," said John C. Sawhill, President, Nature Conservancy.
The size and power of the eagle are magnified in many people's minds.
At fourteen pounds, the weight of a large house cat, an adult eagle is a
capable hunter with eyes six to eight times sharper than a human's. The
eagle can spot a fish from a hundred feet above the water. A rabbit can
be seen from one mile away and, if necessary, can become lunch to the eagle
from a one-hundred-miles an hour dive.
This eagle lives at the Lowry Park Zoo, Tampa.

Dave at age 3,
Sixteen years later this would become almost a full time obsession.
Twenty years later and he was still out in the rain and cold Connecticut air cycling, usually thirty miles a day. Now that we live in Sunny Florida he continues to sweat it out on that 'thing'. Somewhere in between work and riding he has time to play 18 holes of golf. Good thing he is married to a nurse!
