Portia Bates is an enthusiastic young teacher at a college in the south of England, but her world is turned upside-down when she is made redundant. Swearing revenge, she soon discovers a way to strike back at her ungrateful former masters - by diverting funds from their English Department to set up a brothel.
As Portia becomes wealthier, her ambition grows, and soon she is plotting the blackmail of prominent politicians. Sinister New Labour minister Damien Sedgwick, meanwhile, thinks he can use the college to get good publicity for himself. Neither he nor Portia, however, has reckoned on the students' ability to cause enough mayhem to ruin their plans - especially when they discover a wartime arms cache hidden beneath the college.
