To Defy Destiny
By Drakin Tenryu

Chapter 5: kako no naka e

“Masaka....” Kirin whispered almost to himself. “How can it be happening so soon?” He turned to face Chronomon directly.

“Of that we are not sure. What we do know is that for us to set things right, we must do this now.” Came the grave reply.

“Demo.....if...if we do this, you’ll die. sona no yada!” Kirin was looking solemn now.

Chronomon sighed. “Kirin you said you would do this. You made a vow that you would do what it took for the sake of the greater good. Don’t back out now. Not when we need you the most.” Chronomon floated over to the distraught boy.

“I’ve lost so much......so many lives already. Why do I have to keep losing everyone?! Why can’t we find another way? Why does there have to be so much sacrifice?” He was yelling now.

“YAMERU! I know how you have lost. I know it has been hard. I am sorry for that Kirin, however if this works all will be set right. All of the guardians will be alive again. This will be set right. I will be alive. Kirin, this is your duty. Do not run from it. Kirin, tanomi ni suru!”

“Hai.” Kirin looked down. “Let’s do this.” Chronomon hovered into a small clearing. He started to glow a bright orange-yellow. Kirin turned to face the adults around him. “Everyone I know I’m not exactly the best person to be trusting right now. Especially from your viewpoint, but I’m asking you now. Please trust me. I.....or rather we have to do something in order to preserve what is. I can’t do it without your help. Once again the digital world calls upon you to become the digidestined yet again. Are you willing to risk everything to save the twin worlds again?” He looked at them sadly. The face of someone who had already sacrificed and knew that responsibility weighed heavy on his heart.

They all looked around at each other, unsure of what exactly to do. Kirin had showed a wide range of emotions towards them, mostly aggression and anger. They didn’t really want to put their lives in his hands.

One by one though they settled their sight on Tai. They looked toward him for a semblance of guidance. Tai, on the other hand, was busy looking at Kirin. He was trying to read him. To see if he could put all their lives in his hands.

Kirin looked back at him pleadingly. “Please Taichi. If ever there was a time to take a risk, now is that time.”

“I don’t know how you expect me to just trust you with all our lives. I don’t even know who or what you are.”

“I’m the one trying to save your world from annihilation, as well as this one. Taichi, when it comes down to it, it’s either stay here and die, or come with me and live to save all that you hold dear.”

“I guess when you put it that way we really have no choice but to go with you. Wherever it is we’re going to that is.” Tai sighed in frustration. He hated being given an ultimatum. Especially if it risked the lives of his friends.

“At the moment, no, you don’t have much of a choice. However I am offering you a chance at survival. We don’t have much time, hurry.” Kirin ran over to Chronomon. “I’m ready.”

“Very well then. Have them take their positions. Remember Ten-chan, we aren’t dieing. Merely changing, you will not be alone.” Kirin nodded sadly. He turned to the others.

“I need all of you to form a circle around us. digimon in front of your partner. Just hold still and I’ll handle the rest.” He turned to Chrnonmon again and nodded. The large digimon floated higher in the air, he raised up above Kirin. Everyone took their place around him.

A Thundering roar sounded in the distance. Everyone turned to look at the large swirl of blackness moving towards them. The blood red eyes blazed into fiery infernos. A bolt of black lightning snaked towards them and struck the ground a few yards away. Large chunks of dirt and dust rained down on them as the earth was scoured with deep grooves. Jyou and Michael began to back away.

“Focus here!” Kirin shouted over the roaring. “Even as this world falls into oblivion, don’t look. No matter what happens I will protect you. Don’t get scared, daijoubu yo. I promise nothing will happen to you.” He gave them an encouraging grin. “I don’t plan on dieing here, so neither should you.” He looked upwards at Chronomon. “Ready!” He shouted over the roaring noise.

Chronomon started to flash brightly and shake violently. Kirin closed his eyes and held his arms out wide. He too started to glow brightly. “By the seal of my true name. Give me the power to change destiny. Help me push back the blight. The path is dark, I have lost my way. Here my plea, shine your light. Unlock your might, grant me the gift of angel flight.”{Yeah so it's corny as hell. JUST LIVE WITH IT DAMN IT!} The large digimon shuttered violently then shattered. The sand fell around Kirin and swirled about him. The swirling dust settle on him, he looked upwards. “Holy Light” The cloudy sky swirled and opened above them. A bright pillar of light shone done on them. Everyone started to glow the color of their respected crest. Digimon included.

Another thundering roar sounded, closer this time. A bolt of black lightning lashed out from the darkness approaching them. It struck the light as if it hit a wall. A second roar of fury sounded out. The huge glowing red eyes widened in absolute rage as more bolts of black energy rained down on the barrier.

Mimi screamed in terror as a bolt struck the barrier just meters from her. Kirin looked over at her. “Ochitsuku yo! He can’t penetrate the barrier. I told you I’d protect you didn’t I?” He gave her a tight smile. sweat was beginning to trail down his face. The strain on him from holding the extra power of chronomon was apparent. More dark energy hurled itself at the light barrier. slowly the digidestined felt a pull coming from Kirin’s direction. It was a slight gentle tugging feeling, like a small child trying to get their attention. A beam of light shining the color of their crest shot out from each of them and hit Kirin. One by one energy from their crests started to flow out of them and into Kirin. Their power was absorbed into him and he glowed even brighter. The crests on Kirin’s hands and shoulders and the symbol on his forehead blazed brightly as well.

The combination of being drained of their crest energy, the bright lights and the thundering sounds of the blasts hitting the barrier were too much for the humans and weakened digimon. All of them soon lost consciousness.

Kirin gazed at them through squinted eyes. He glared at the oncoming mass of evil. ‘I won’t let you have them. I’ll beat you this time. I swear it! I’ll ensure the bright future that they were meant to have. I’ll bring back yesterday and change tomorrow.’ He closed his eyes and concentrated. His body crunched up into a fetal position as he floated in the air. ‘Onegai. Give me the strength to protect everyone......... Kurushii...........Kore o suru dekinai........... Oneechan tasukete.’ Kirin’s face distorted in pain as the overwhelming amount of power flowing within him started to overtake him.

A bright ball of light floated down the pillar of light towards him. It stopped in front of Kirin. Slowly it stretched out, elongated into the form of a woman. her form from the chest down was indistinguishable because it was bathed in light. her hair glowed bright silver and swayed in the winds that swirled around them. She raised a gentle hand to Kirin’s face.

~shhhh, daijoubu yo Ten-chan. Atashi wa anata to issho ni. Minna to issho ni kaerumashou.~

She turned and merged with Kirin. he opened his eyes. The crests of hope and light flashed on his back and transparent wings began to sprout from his back. They grew outwards behind him, huge large wings, spanning 25 feet each. The stretched out behind them and slowly started to fold foreword. As they did, the glowing crest light from the digidestined and digimon was gathered against them. They slowly circled till they were pointed outward in front of Kirin. The tips curled inward and began to fold back towards Kirin. Tai and Matt’s crest light was gathered as well as the wings moved in and wrapped around Kirin. ‘Imana!’ Kirin’s arms spread out to his sides as his wings spread out in the same fashion. In a voice comprised of his own and of the heavenly female, {You know like when they DNA digivolve}they shouted. “TEMPORAL DISTORTION”

Blue flicks of electricity danced in the air high above him. Green swirling masses of energy soon joined in, followed by orange, yellow and red rays. They merged together into a pulsing ball or energy and suddenly exploded outward. A large tunnel formed in the sky within the pillar of light. Green, blue orange and yellow hues of shimmering light swirled together within the tunnel. The swirling movement spiraled upwards, giving the sense of movement.

Kirin opened his eyes, looking up at the tunnel they had created. “ANGEL WING!” They said together. Kirin shot upwards into the vortex, his wings shining brightly. He entered the vortex and groaned loudly when the turbulent forces within began to push and pull on him. He focused and surged forward. Flashes of events began to appear before him. Things long since past, and some to come, others long since forgotten. Then a few that were trying to be forgotten. Scenes from the battle against Malomyotismon (I spell that right??) played out in front of him. The birth of the digidestined’s children. ‘I’m so sorry, forgive me.’ He closed his eyes and surged forward again. A scene of the dark fortress, Ken as the emperor sat in front of his numerous monitors plotting. A flash of Angemon digivolving to Magna Angemon and defeating Piedmon. All these Kirin flew past and sped towards his destination. However, one scene, one memory he couldn’t ignore. Kirin looked on in horror as events played themselves out in front of him. ‘That‘s me......this is my......... past?’ {of course if this were an actual episode you wouldn’t see anything, just Kirin’s reaction to this event and his thought about what it is. I’m not going to give away his past just yet. ^_^} He was lost in these events that a second voice had to get his attention to help him focus.

~Kamawana Ten-chan. Mitsumete massugu.~

Kirin nodded. “Ryoukai!” He looked away and continued ahead.

~^+*+^~

The pillar of light that had protected Kirin and the others against the attacks of the oncoming darkness slowly began to retreat back into the sky. The swirling blackness converged around the pillar and surged under it as it began to raise upwards. The red eyes reared up glaring at the vortex that seamed to cut into the air. “So my little angel, you think you can escape me by running to the past?” The voice chortled to itself. “I will chase you to creation itself if I must! Ha ha, you have unwittingly given me the keys to your undoing. You aren’t the only one that can travel through the temporal gateway.” Dozens of dark orbs broke away from the darkness and hovered under the gateway. “Go now my dark warriors. Chase them down, hunt them, stalk them. FIND THEM! Tear them apart and herald the coming of my apocalypse.” The dark orbs rocketed off into the tunnel. The ominous voice laughed madly.

~^+*+^~

Kirin continued on their journey through the tunnel. Blue electricity started to spark around him. He slowed down and looked ahead of him. The air in the tunnel ahead of him shimmered. As if there was a wall of water suspended vertically in the air. ‘So this must be the guardian of the gateway.’ Kirin thought to himself.

“Who dares?!” Thundered a irritated voice. This was stated more like a accusation then a question. The blue bolts of energy lashed out at Kirin. Dodging as best, he could he tried to answer the question.

“I have the authority of chronomon to be here. I carry the life forces of the chosen children. If you would give me a chance, I could prove it!” He shouted as he flapped around the deadly flicks of lightning. The attack let up, but the sparks of energy still slashed around him. If he failed to prove his claim, he would most assuredly be destroyed. Kirin held his hands to his chest, small auras glowed within him. “This is the life force of the destined ones. Now let me pass.”

“Your claims prove true winged one, however passage through the gateway is forbidden. No matter what the reason, traveling through time has dire consequences, that even I cannot ignore. I am sorry, but you cannot continue. Leave now, or be extinguished.” The waiting lighting flicked and flashed dangerously close.

“I know the rules! I know the consequences. It is BECAUSE of these consequences that I must pass. I have no time for debate, stand aside and let me by, or I go through you!” Kirin narrowed his eyes preparing for an all out assault.

Portions of the flowing green, blue and orange swirling power began to bulge off the wall. It pinched off and formed into pulsing orbs, the hovered before him, blocking his path. “You are strong little one, but I am the guardian of the gateway for a reason.” With this statement the streaking lightning around him showered down upon him. The energy orbs swarmed at him. Kirin looked on in shock.

~ABUNAI! YOKETE!~

Kirin reacted to the warning and began to dodge the onslaught directed at him. He blocked an oncoming orb with his arm, searing pain spread throughout his arm. “ITAI! Those things are tough. I don’t think I’ll be blocking many of those any time soon.” He ducked out of the way, narrowly missing being hit in the head.

“How long do you plan on keeping this up? I can go on forever, you can not. Turn back now while you can.”

“Well aren’t we sure of ourself.” Kirin looked around for a way to try and get by. His face scrunched up and he felt something. “Nani.........kono kanji? He turned to look behind him, heedless of the possibility that any number of attacks could hit him.

The dark spheres were approaching rapidly. Kirin raised his arms and fired at them. His attacks merely slowed them down. He concentrated harder and attacked again. He managed to destroy one.

“To think that something like this is in the gateway. existence must be protected. I have no choice but to allow you to pass. I will stop as many of them as I can. In the very least I will slow them down. You can't do anything as you are now, you will only be destroyed. GO NOW, I will handle them.” The blue, green and orange orbs flowed at the dark ones coming at them. The bolts of lighting streaked out and struck the orbs. A blue orb connected with it’s target, the orbs opened and a large creature with tentacles was vaporized in the blue light. A bolt of lightning ripped an orb open. A huge bug dropped out of it. It resembled a praying mantis, however it was a dark brown and was covered in wickedly curved spines all over it’s body. Another bolt of lightning ripped it to pieces, disintegrating it. “What are you doing boy? Don’t just float there! GET GOING!” A opening appeared in the shimmering air in front of Kirin.

Kirin looked up higher at the shimmering surface of the wall. “Arigatou.”

“Thank me when you have saved all time from this infection. I am entrusting the past to you. Protect it, you can’t afford to lose.”

Kirin nodded. “Wakata!” He folded his wings around him and flew through the opening. It sealed behind him. Kirin flew ahead not looking back, he knew the fate of the gatekeeper already. ‘Another name to add to the list of those who have fallen to save us. I won’t forget, I’ll avenge all of you!’ He surged forward, a window opened next to him. he could see the gatekeeper in it. He couldn’t help but watch what he knew would happen.

~^+*+^~

The dark orbs swarmed ahead, a few were destroyed by the blue, green and orange energy balls. Lightning strikes ripped apart a few more. Still more kept coming, there seemed to be no end to the stream of dark spheres. “KONJOU MISETERU!” The gatekeeper roared. Small whirlpool opened up along the gateway’s edge. Some of the oncoming orbs were sucked into them, the small vortexes then vanished. Bars of white light appeared and shot off towards the army of invaders. The bars spun as they approached them, they sliced clean through their targets. More bolts of lightning rained down as even more energy balls emerged to meet the aggressors. Still, more dark orbs kept coming. One came in contact with the guardian, it slammed into the wavering barrier.

~^+*+^~

Kirin reached the end of the tunnel. It opened up into a large circular room. The only thing within it was a pulsing golden orb, it was surrounded by three rings that rotated about it. ‘This is the temporal nexus? I expected more.’ Kirin looked at it a few more seconds taking it in.

~HAYOU!~

Kirin nodded and flew over to the sphere. He placed his hands up against it and his wings folded around it. ‘All I have to do is concentrate on where I want to go, the nexus will take me there.’

The rings circling around the sphere expanded. They phased over Kirin and began to rotate around the walls of the cavern. Scenes from the past began to display on the walls. The scenes soon began to all synchronize around one event. The digidestined were all standing around in a park it seemed. They seemed to still be in they’re teens. ‘There, that’s it! Ok, now take us there.’

~^+*+^~

The dark orb was ripped apart by a crack of lightning, only to be replaced by five more. The guardian howled in pain. “I’ll stop you if it’s the last thing I do!” The shimmering barrier contracted in on itself. The orbs that had been trapped passed by and continued on their journey. An explosion erupted from where the guardian had been. the blast spread both ways along the gateway, destroying everything it it’s path. It made it way to the nexus. Riding just if front of the event of the deadly energy were nine dark orbs. They flew towards the nexus chamber.

~^+*+^~

Kirin held onto the amassing energy the nexus was gathering up. The ball of power stretched out to a vertical line. This then stretched horizontally into a large doorway. “Alright!” Kirin winced again as he sensed the dark presence he had felt before. He turned around. The dark orbs entered the chamber, followed by the massive surge of destructive energy. “Uh oh.” He turned back around and hurled himself through the doorway. The orbs soon too followed him through. The doorway closed as the chamber was destroyed by the explosive force of the attack.

~^+*+^~

“Well I guess this is it for a while everyone, I’m heading back to America in the morning.” A 15 year old Mimi said to the rest of the digidestined. She looked around sadly.

“We’ll miss you Mimi.” Izzy replied. “I also guess this is a good time to tell everyone that I might be going away soon too. There’s a really good tech school in Kyoto that has some interest in me. So my parents are thinking about moving there so I don’t have to live in some dorm if I decide to go.” Izzy looked up and was surprised to see shock on everyone’s faces. “What’s wrong? You didn’t think I could get into a good school or something?”

Tai fidgeted a little. “Well it’s not that Izz, it’s just well.......We all came to depend on you. You’re always there to help us with all that computer help. Who’s going to help us now when we need someone to do something spectacular on the computer?” Izzy just blinked at him. All the others nodded their agreement.

“Well I won’t have to worry about that soon I guess.” Matt said rather regretfully. “Some record companies are taking some interest in the band. We might just hit it big soon. So I guess I might not be around much either is what I’m trying to say.” He looked up at Tai trying to read his reaction.

Tai remained neutral. Totally devoid of emotion, he just stared at Matt. He opened his mouth to respond but closed it. Agumon next to him looked on in confusion. As did all the other digimon partners at each of their human’s sides.

“That’s OK, you’ll send us all tickets to all of your concerts right?” Sora asked while she held onto Matt’s arm. She looked up lovingly at him. Matt didn’t know what to say. So he just gave her a dumb grin that looked more like a grimace than anything else.

“Well I guess this is it then.” Ken sighed. They all looked at him. He didn’t get a chance to respond to their questioning glares as the wind picked up. The air above them shimmered and sparked with energy. The sky opened up and a white light floated downward towards them. Everyone shielded their eyes and tried to get a look at whatever it was that was coming at them. The huddled in a group before it as it descended downward and stopped to hover a few feet in the air. The stared at it as the light lessened and it glowed with just a faint aura.

It seemed to unfold as giant wings separated apart. Kirin looked at the past digidestined with curiosity, his gaze lingered on Yamato and Tai for a moment. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Return.” he held his hands to his chest and orbs of different color light formed up. The flew out and absorbed into the digidestined of their color. Five gray balls of light flew up into the air and shot across the sky. Kirin eyes opened and his face showed exhaustion, he floated down to the ground and sank to his knees. The large wings began to break apart into little particles. He leaned forward and supported himself with his left hand so he would fall over completely. He looked up at the others.

“What’s going on? Last thing I remember was passing out from feeling like I was being drained.” Davis asked looking at Kirin. His face scrunched up in confusion and he held his hand to his throat. “HEY! WHAT’S WRONG WITH MY VOICE?!” He shrieked, his voice cracking as any male adolescent's does.

“Why does everything look so high up? What’s wrong with my voice?!” Cody gasped as he looked at everyone else, he had to look up, WAY up.

Tai looked around at everyone wondering why the looked like teenagers, and in some instances still children. “Kirin.” He waited, Kirin was looking at the ground, obviously tired. His wings scattering away rapidly. ‘Kirin!” He put a little more force into his voice hoping it was get the boy to reply. Kirin did indeed respond, he looked upwards at Tai with tired eyes. “What did you do to us?”

“I......brought you....us.....back.” His voice wavered. He was trying very hard to hold on to consciousness.

“Back? Back where?”

“To the past. Where things began to go wrong. Now they can be corrected. Now we can work for a bright future, to protect tomorrow.” Kirin’s eyes began to close, his head drooped a little. He was close to passing out.

“Kirin.......KIRIN! Stay with us. WHEN did you bring us back, to what time.”

Kirin’s eyes opened, his head lolled to the side a little. “Approximately two years after the defeat of malomyotismon. You are.........16......the others can figure their ages from there.” He raised his left hand towards Davis. The goggles given to him by Tai began to shake. The lifted up off his head and hovered in the air. Kirin moved his arm towards Tai, the goggles flew towards him. Kirin lowered his hand and the goggles fell into Tai’s waiting hands. “You are the leader again Taichi.”

“Why are we in are old, or rather younger bodies. What happened to our....older selves?” Izzy inquired.

“Your human bodies couldn’t handle the stress of traveling through the gateway. I pulled your life force, you souls, out of your bodies and carried them within myself for the journey. I have placed you in your younger selves because souls cannot exist on this plain with out a vessel to house them. You were readily absorbed into your younger selves because your soul recognized itself, you have complete memory of what has happened for the next 25 years. however what you do now will alter things drastically.”

“What about our children?” Kari demanded.

Kirin looked away and shook his head. “Even if I had brought their souls back with us, there would be nothing to place them in, they would have been lost either way. I am sorry.” Tears streamed down from most of the others faces. Kirin’s wings had completely dissipated now. He body began to slowly scatter as well.

“Are you dieing? You know what is happening, you can’t just leave us here like this!” Matt snapped at him.

A smirk graced Kirin’s face. “I am not abandoning you. My body has reached it’s limit, the stress of holding all the energy needed to enter the gateway and carrying your life forces has drained it.” He held his hand out towards Izzy, his computer flipped off his backpack and landed on the ground. It opened up and turned on. the digiport appeared on it’s screen. “I will also go to my younger self.”

“What are you talking about? you can’t be any older than 22 at the most I doubt even that. If we are in the correct time period that you say you brought us back to, you can’t possibly have been born then. You have no body to return to.” Joe wondered more to himself than to anyone else.

Kirin had heard him. “Looks can be deceiving Joe. Not everything is as it seems. Time changes many things.“ His body was beginning to dissolve away faster. his body completely disintegrated. Two blazing white lights formed up where he used to be. “You are not alone. I am watching you. You will not be left here to fight alone.” Kirin’s voice drifted over from one of the spheres. They circled around the group of baffled teens and flew into the computer and entered the digiport. It whirled and beeped as it opened, signaled a transfer than closed. The laptop shut down on it’s own.

Izzy stared at his cherished computer for a long while, everyone did. For quite some time no one spoke, until Yolei (STILL think is should be spelled YOLIE!) asked what they all wanted to. “So now what?”

~^+*+^~

A strong gust of wind began to blow in the digital world. The air shimmered and a rift cut through the night sky. It opened up and the nine dark orbs that had followed Kirin into the doorway flew out of the hole. They hovered in the air for a few minutes then shot across the sky in search of something.

~^+*+^~

Matt walked into the apartment he had known as a child and young adult. He slowly turned around taking in the once familiar surroundings. “To think I used to dream of getting away from here and not looking back ever again.” He wiped at the tears that he knew would start to fall. He turned in the direction of his father’s bedroom and slowly took a few hesitant steps towards it. His hand shook as he grabbed the knob and slowly pushed the door open. He gazed in at the empty room, his father was obviously still at work, or had just went in, depending on the station. “I guess I still have to wait to see him.” He closed the door and went into his room and crawled into bed.

Gabumon watched him with sympathy. “Don’t worry Matt, there’s still time.” Matt only hugged his pillow.

~^+*+^~

Tokyo looked quiet and peaceful from the top of the radio tower. The city glowed with millions of lights, they seemed to be trying to out shine the stars above. At the moment it was working as two shadowed figures gazed out over the sleeping city.

“So, this is the real world?” A young voice asked. It was indistinguishable as to whether or not it was male or female.

“Mmm. Kirei desu ne?” A second young voice answered and asked in response.

“Hontou.” The first voice answered.

“ikemashou ka?”

“Mhmm! Look out real world! Cause here we come!” The first voice declared enthusiastically.

~^+tsuzuku^+~

Well alright then! This piece of crap took me.......well you look at the time frame to see how long it took my lazy ass to get this together. I HAD planned on adding in some more stuff but I think I’ve confused you enough already as it is.
