Washington's strategic target in Central Asia - by Cecil Williams, Workers World - When investigators look into a murder, however, their first question is not, "Who disliked the victim?" They want to know who will benefit from the crime. The Sept. 11 deaths of over 6,000 people, many Muslims among them, benefit no one in the Islamic world. But for some rich and powerful people in the United States, the tragedy will pay off quite handsomely. (more)

Signs of the Times - by Naomi Klein, The Nation, October 22, 2001 - [...] the modern activist challenge: How do you organize against an ideology so vast, it has no edges; so everywhere, it seems nowhere? Where is the site of resistance for those with no workplaces to shut down, whose communities are constantly being uprooted? What do we hold on to when so much that is powerful is virtual -- currency trades, stock prices, intellectual property and arcane trade agreements? (more)

The Civilian Toll - by A. J. Chien, Institute for Health and Social Justice, October 11 - According to Michael Tonry, Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota, "In the criminal law, purpose and knowledge are equally culpable states of mind. An action taken with a purpose to kill is no more culpable than an action taken with some other purpose in mind but with knowledge that a death will probably result. Blowing up an airplane to kill a passenger is equivalent to blowing up an airplane to destroy a fake painting and thereby to defraud an insurance company, knowing that the passenger will be killed. Both are murder. Most people would find the latter killing more despicable" (Malign Neglect, p. 32). (more)

Bin Laden Family Could Profit From a Jump In Defense Spending Due to Ties to U.S. Bank - by Daniel Golden, James Bandler and Marcus Walker, Wall Street Journal (posted at globalresearch.ca) - [...] the bin Laden family has become acquainted with some of the biggest names in the Republican Party [...] "If there were ever any company closely connected to the U.S. and its presence in Saudi Arabia, it's the Saudi Binladin Group," says Charles Freeman, president of the Middle East Policy Council, a Washington nonprofit concern that receives tens of thousands of dollars a year from the bin Laden family. "They're the establishment that Osama's trying to overthrow." (more)

Hawks and Doves fight for Control of Campaign: America Weighs up its Military Options - by Ed Vulliamy, The Observer, 30 September 2001, (posted at globalresearch.ca) - As war begins in Afghanistan, so does the assault on the White House - to win the ear and signed orders of the military's Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush, for what Pentagon hawks call 'Operation Infinite War'. It is a sinister reworking of the original codename for the mobilisation against the Taliban, Operation Infinite Justice, that had to be changed because it offended Islam, which holds that this is something that only Allah - and not B-52 bombers - can dispense.
