GOLD HILL & WALLSTREET | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
WALLSTREET Wallstreet was originally called Sugarloaf, then Delphi, and then it was renamed Wallstreet in April of 1898. It was eventaully named Wallstreet by Charles Caryl, due to the fact that it was attracting a lot of attention in the stock market and with investors. In 1902, a mill named The Gold Extracation Company was built. It processed high grade ore from mines sucha s the Nanny, Grandview, Lion's Roost and Gold Eagle. The peak year of production was 1903. But the ore played out and the mill was closed in 1905. Some mines still produced small amounts of ore into the 1960's when they were all closed down. Today at Wallstreet, a few buildings survive. Among them are the towering walls of the Gold Extraction Company mill, a school and a large residence. |

GOLD HILL In January of 1859, six prospectors from Boulder Canyon found a placer deposit in Gold Run Creek. The town of Gold Hill sprang up on the side of the mountain next to the main ore body and mine. By 1869, the mine had played out and the town was deserted. But in 1872, a second discovery took place at the Red Cloud Mine. This time the town was rebuilt down the mountain at its current location. The mines eventually played out again nad the town was deserted again. Today, there a few residents in the area. Remaining from its heyday, are the 1872 Blue Bird Lodge, 1873 schoolhouse, a church, cemetary, the Gold Hill Inn, log cabins and the Gold Hill Store. |
