In 1859, a placer gold deposit was found in Clear Creek. Mnay towns sprung up in the area including Nevadaville, Central City and Blackhawk. This area has been called "The Richest Square Mile on Earth." Within a few years, the easy to find gold was gone. It appeared that these towns would decline. But then in 1867, a smelter was built in Blackhawk, and business as usual continued. By the 1880's, the best ore was gone. The mines were still producing, but at a more steady pace until the early 1900's. Then the towns started to die out. Nevadaville today, has a few good buildings left from its heyday. Included in these buildings are The Bald Mountain Trading Post, a brick and stone false front store, a Town Hall/ Fire Department and another brick store. Nearby Central City and Blackhawk are now gaming towns (gambling). |
