IDAHO CITY | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The first gold was discovered here on August 2, 1862. Settlements sprang up here in Boise Basin as a result. The area became known as Bannock City. It was located in Washington Territory. Idaho Territory would be created in 1863, by President Lincoln. IN 1864, Bannock City changed its name to Idaho City. It had a population of 20,000, and was the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. On May18, 1865, fire consumed about 80% of the city in just 2 hours. Two years later, to the exact day, fire swept through again. This time the townspeople were more prepared. They saved many of the buildings. Many of these still stand today. | ![]() |
