FIERRO & HANOVER
Fierro and Hanover are two sister towns.  They are located near Silver City.  They are just a couple miles apart.  Fierro is Spanish for iron.  That's what was mined at Fierro.  Zinc was mined at Hanover.  And copper was mined at nearby Santa Rita.  In the early 1880's, Lt. Col. Jose Manuel Carrasco befriended the Apaches in the area.  He was given a solid copper arrowpoint as a sign of friendship. The Apaches told him of a solid copper outcropping nearby.  This is where he started a copper mine at present day Santa Rita.
The mine that stands at Hanover was built during WWI.  The peak production was from this time until the 1930's.  There are still many old buildings remaining at both towns.
