HACHITA & OLD HACHITA
          HACHITA / OLD HACHITA
Old Hachita was founded in 1875. It originally went by the name Hachita.  It was named for the "Little Hachet" mountains nearby.  The mines produced silver, lead, turquoise and copper.  The post office was opened in 1882.  By 1884, Old Hachita had 300 residents.  It also had steam smelting works, two general stores, several saloons and several mining companies.  It was at this site that two brothers named Hazlett were gunned down by the Clanton Gang from Tombstone.  During the 1890's, Old Hachita started to decline.  In the very early 1900's railroad tracks were laid nine miles to the east.  A town sprang up here and took the name of the declining town, Hachita.  Since then, the old town has been refered to as Old Hachita.  Today, the railroad is gone, but a few residents still live in Hachita.  there are many old and interesting buildings in both towns.
