                  PIEDMONT
In 1869, a Union Pacific Railroad town was named Byrne.  It was later changed to Piedmont.  It was a mining and ranching town.  Many soldiers would come from nearby Fort Bridger to hang out in the saloons .  There was also a general store, post office, school, hotel and a newspaper.  The town thrived until 1901, when the Aspen Tunnel (railraod tunnel through the Rockies) opened up in Colorado.  This hurt the towns economy, less trains coming through meant less money coming in.  The town faded off the map.  Although, the Aspen Tunnel helped amny Colorado mountain towns (see Colorado ghost towns).
A few old cabins remain today.  Also still standing are some excellent specimens of stone charcoal kilns.  All of the town is now on a private ranch (No Tresspassing).  But much is visible without needing to trespass.
