Coffee Shop
A little lesson in quality vs hype

Coffee's a major factor in our lives, as it is in many military families (and make no mistake, even though retired - we're a military family).  We've tasted coffees from all over the world and both of us have come to one in-escapable conclusion,

Americans make the most horrid coffee in the world!

Go ahead, take that as a criticizm - it's meant that way.  For years, Americans have been hearing about the wonders of "Columbian" coffee.  Well, you can have it.

Ever go to a place like McDonalds
(not meant to advertise here) and try their coffee?  Or a really fine restaurant?  It doesn't taste like yours at home, does it?  Here's the dirty little secret:

.

They don't use Columbian coffee.
.

Columbian coffees are invariably bitter.  That hype about "clean your pot after every round", and "it's the oils that are bitter", is pretty much just that - hype.  It's meant, in my opinion, to distract us from the fact that their coffees just aren't that good.

Arabica coffee's where it's at!

Now, here's good coffee.  Arabica beans are just a little bit different from Columbian beans, don't ask me why, they just are.  They're also much better and they make a much superior cup/pot of coffee.  These little gems are all but guaranteed NEVER to make a bitter pot of coffee, and you can leave the coffee on the warmer for hours and it doesn't get bitter, no matter how strong it is - and I make coffee that's strong enough to come and pour itself when I whistle for it.

Most grocery stores carry some kind of Arabica coffee.  Arabica is priced about the same as Columbian, sometimes it's actually lower priced.  Personally, I prefer (again, not to advertise) Folgers Gourmet Supreme or Wal-Mart's Arabica coffee - they're equal to each other and both are very good, the Folgers might just be a little bit better, but that's me.

Anyway, that's the real secret to really good coffee.  Try it!  You'll like it.
