The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation
All proceeds from the Highland Park Cyclocross will be donated to the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation. Founded in 1975, the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation is a non-profit organization of firefighters dedicated to the advancement of burn care, research, prevention, and education. In addition to various public education and fire prevention programs, the Foundation funds the New York Firefighters Skin Bank at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The Skin Bank collects skin from deceased organ donors, and this skin is then used for skin graft operations for burn patients. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Medical College operates the only burn intensive care unit in the New York City region, and many victims of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center were taken there. While some patients have recovered enough to go home, others remain in critical condition—unconscious, on respirators, their bodies covered with burns, clinging to life. As terrible as their injuries are, however, these people still have a chance—unlike those who were lost when the World Trade Center collapsed, such as Joe Giordano, FDNY Firefighter, and Vice-President of the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation.
Please join us at the Highland
Park Cyclocross this Sunday to race bikes, celebrate life, and offer
a gesture of support to those who were most deeply affected by the tragedy
of September 11.
The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation financially supports the following programs at the NewYork Weill Cornell Center of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital:
