What is a Housing Co-op?
When individuals in the community need housing but cannot find affordable accommodation they can join together as a team and help provide homes for themselves.
The association of people work together to obtain housing stock and manage and control the premises acquired. Every member has an equal say in decision making because everyone contributes to the running of the organisation.
Commitment from the members ensures the expansion of the Co-op and eventually earns every tenant affordable housing of a reasonably high standard within a community of friends and good neighbours.
How does it work in practice?
There are no full time members of staff so the co-op is dependant on all of its individual members contributing to the overall running of the organisation. You do not need to have previous experience in a particular area, just a willingness to learn and be proactive to the cause.
Who can join the Co-op?
The membership is open to anyone over 18 who lives, works or has some connection to the London Borough of Ealing. The Co-op usually consists of people who cannot afford a mortgage or privately rented accommodation, or people who are considered a low priority on council or housing association lists.
