African Maps 2003 | ![]() |
|||||||||||||||||||||
The purpose of this page is to provide access to several geographic references. The map of Africa is constantly in a state of change. The mapmakers of the continent were dedicated to updating the map twice a month in 2003. The small pockets of territories identified by numbers are called "microstates." These small states join the continent and often do not have much interaction with the other members. They are constantly at war with one another over petty boundaries and never successfully mount much of a foreign policy agenda with Africa at large. However, from these microregions have emerged some of the largest and most politically active countries in Africa. When a state first enters Africa they emerge on the map as a microstate. Only after dedication to the people of the state and the involvement in the affairs of Africa, the microstate begins to blossom into a macrostate -- a regional player with power in the African Union and with impact on the policies of the region. |
