Treasure Hunt WebQuest

An Internet WebQuest on Treasure Hunt

created by Csibi Erzsébet

Introduction

Have you ever sailed the sea? Have you ever heard stories about pirates and their buried treasure? Have you ever read Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson?

In this project you are going to sail the sea, meet pirates and search for their buried treasure. You may even read some chapters from Treasure Island and follow the adventures of Hawkins.

If you work alone, imagine you are a traveller who likes exciting adventures. If you work in groups, you can choose a role for yourself - a traveller, a scientist, a journalist.

As you process with your adventure you are going to get some tasks. Always follow the instructions (written in red) before reading on. During your quest also try to find the information for the questions asked in the first part of the WebQuest. (You might want to take notes for that.)

Use the Internet as a resource.

Find the answers for these questions

The Journey

You are sailing on the sea. It's really nice and calm but suddenly a big hurricane arrives and reaches your sailboat. CRASH! The boat starts sinking!
Quick! You have about 5 minutes to pack everything you need in a backpack.  (Page 1)
Suddenly something hits your head and you loose your consciousness...

The Island

...the next thing you remember is you are lying on the beach of a beautiful little island full of palm trees. Your backpack is lying in the soft, warm sand next to you.
Explore the island with the help of the map given to you. Listen to the description and draw. (Page 2)
You discover something - other people have been to this island! Who were they? Why were they here? You have a suspicion...

The pirates

You find some guns, swords, different pieces of clothes and a Jolly Roger! There were PIRATES on this island! Find out about them as much as you can and discuss the following questions:

Who was their captain?
What was the name of their ship?
How and why did they come to this island?
When were they here?
What did their Jolly Roger look like?

Desing your own Jolly Roger. (Page 3)

The ship

As you walk on a cliff you discover a ship in a little bay. It's empty. Hurray! You can go home! The only problem is that you have never sailed a ship. As you search the captain's cabin, you find a handbook on sailing. Now you only have to know what you call the different parts of the ship and then you can sail off. Look at the picture of a ship (page 4) and find out the names of at least five parts.

The message

As you search the captain's cabin you find a piece of stone. You look at it closer. There is a writing on it! But you can't read it  because you don't know the symbols. You remember that you saw a similar writing when you were on Oak Island once. Find the code and read the message you are given. (Page 5)

The treasure

You go to the place given in the message but you only find another message. Ask your teacher for instruction. Follow the instructions given to you to find the treasure.

The way home

Now you are a rich man! As you have a flag for your ship, you know how to sail and you also have some food to eat, you can return home.

Don't forget to answer the 6 questions you got at the beginning of your journey!

Have a safe journey!
