Star Blazers Fleet Battle System:
The Battle: After the defeat of the great comet at Earth the repaired Argo ( Yamato ) and the first EDF ships off the assembly line were sent to the planet Pluto to relieve the Earth base. As the Earth fleet approached the planet, long range scanners showed the reason for Pluto bases silence. A fleet of Comet Empire ships spoiling for revenge.
The Fleets:
Earth Defense Force 1 x SBB ARGO (Yamato)................607 Total.................................................2863 |
Comet Empire 3 x SBB (Bringer of Victory class).........1863
|
The EDF fleet was sent to relieve the base at Pluto and as a result the EDF carrier is not equipped with Battlecraft. The hanger area is reserved for medical equipment and supplies.
The Battle: Note: For the sake of instant action both sides agrred to begin the battle at close range to represent the suprise of the EDF fleet by the Comet Empire.
Turn 1: The EDF losses initiative for the first turn and both sides move their ships one at a time. EDF moving first. The EDF move a head slowly as did the Comet Empire Battleships. Meanwhile the C.E. Destroyers surged forward at a speed of six in effort to close the distance with the EDF fleet. The Comet ships open fire on the Argo at extreme range scoring a modest 25 points of damage. Critical hits destroy a small turret. Argo's Defensive lasers make short work of incoming missiles. The Comet Fleet also does some minor damage to the EDF Battleship. The EDF returns fire by concentrating on the incoming Comet destroyers. The Argo destroys two on it's own while the two other C.E. destroyers are damaged.
Turn 2: The EDF wins initiative and movement begins. The fleets meet in the center of the board. Comet Empire Destroyers slow down to get point blank shots at EDF Battleships. The Argo moves abreast of the flanking C.E. Battleship and pours a broadside into it. The EDF Battleship cripples the already damaged C.E. Battleship while the EDF Frigates are destroyed by massive fire. Only one Frigate survives this turn. The EDF Carrier takes out another C.E. Destroyer.
Turn 3: The Comet Empire wins initiative. The only ship to power it's special weapon is the EDF carrier as a result it is moved last by the EDF player in order to line up a shot on a C.E. Battleship. The mighty Argo is bracketed by two C.E. BB's and they blast the Argo mercilessly, scoring heavy damage. At the end of the turn the Argo only has 24 hull boxes left. The EDF Carrier unleashes it's wave motion gun and slams a fresh C.E. Battleship. Scoring a Main Power Hit on the critical damage chart destroying the Comet ship outright!! The EDF battleship finishes off the crippled C.E. Battleship!
(Note: at this point in the game my digital camera died.. :-( )
Turn 4: The EDF wins initiative and it looks bad for the Comet Empire. At this point only one C.E. Battleship and two destroyers remain to take on an EDF Battleship, Carrier and Battlecruiser. The Argo, badly crippled was effectively out of the fight. The C.E. forces have only one option and elect to begin the retreat off the map. While firing at the Argo at range.. hoping to finish off the Argo! Long range fire takes the Argo down to three hull boxes!! Ouch!!! The other EDF ships pursue the retreating Comet ships and Kill the C.E. Destroyer.
Turn 5: The C.E. Battleship makes it off the board and survives.. The EDF Forces are victorious!
Aftermath: The battle was close until turn 3 when the C.E. battleship was destroyed in a lucky blast. The Comet Empire survived with only one battleship. While the EDF had all of it's major ships survive although the Argo was badly pummeled. The Comet player recognized that he should have concentrated his fire on one target at a time until it is destroyed and not sprinkle their fire throughout the EDF fleet. The Comet player swears revenge next battle.
This was our first battle using this game and we wanted to finish it in one night, hence the close deployment of the fleets. I apologize for any game errors people might spot in this report as this battle was a learning experience for all those involved. I will present new and better battle reports in the near future.
