If we were to try to cover the history of English, this website would never be finished. English, like many other subjects, is an a body of work which will never be finished. There will always be new writers, there will always be something you haven't read, the English language will continue to grow and permutate. For that reason we are living English History. Poets.org: This page has a plethera of information regarding poetry. It holds a very impressive body of work and includes biographies on many poets.
OWL at Purdue: The Online Writing Lab at Purdue. A great website for almost anything writing. Inclused MLA and APA style guides, writing prompts, grammar help, and much much more.
List of Famous Authors: A great list of past authors. This site gives links to help you get to know more about your favorite (or soon to be favorite) authors. Some even have links to writings.
