Mathematics Today
The teaching of mathematics is an everchaning endevour.  There is a debate to which is the best approach to teaching.

Some argue that a traditional approach is most effective.  A traditional approach focuses on the learning of math facts, drill and pracitce activities, and less application.  Memorization is a must, but some feel that this does not help students know which situations to apply their knowledge.

A popular approach today is a constructivist approach.  This includes students discovering mathematical ideas through various activities.  Students "construct" their own knowledge through solving problems.  There is less focus on basic rote math skills and practice.  Some feel that without the understanding of rote mathematical skills, too many errors in problem solving situations will occur. Below is a link with more infomration about the constructivist approach.

Approaches to teaching mathematics are not limited to just these ideas.  New ideas are being developed every year.  Teachers must be open to change but must always stand by the approach they find to be most effective with their students.
