Awards

At a normal horse show there will be awards handed out for every class. Usually the first place horse or rider receives a blue ribbon, or champion ribbon. The rider or horse may also receive a trophy or some type of award to replace a trophy, such as tack items. In most shows judges are asked to place individuals from first to sixth place. Each of these placings would usually receive a ribbon. If there are only two people in a class, then they would only place first and second place, or just a first place if the second rider gets disqualified. If both riders get disqualified, then neither person will receive a ribbon.

In most 4-H horse shows judges are asked to place classes using the Danish System. This system is one in which each individual receives an award based on his/her merit. For example, if all of the individuals are deserving of a blue ribbon, then they are all awarded blues. On the other hand, if none of the contestants has proven blue ribbon level, none will receive a blue. This system is also often used in some open shows where there are less that three individuals in a class. If none of the contestants merit moving on to a championship round or regional competition, the judge may elect to award a third place award to the highest performing individual.

High Point

The highpoint award is given to the rider and horse that have received the most points in the entire horse show. Each placing in all classes is worth a certain number of points. Sometimes the rider pays to have these points recorded. At the end of the show the points are tallied up, and the rider that has the most points receives the highpoint award.
