TASK SUMMARY

Station S: NIGHT VISION DEVICES

Point S-1

Task 1: Operate Night Vision Goggles AN/PVS-7B

TASK CONDITIONS: Given AN/PVS-7B complete with batteries.

TEST STANDARDS: Place the AN/PVS-7B into operation within 5 minutes.

SOLDIER'S MANUAL CROSSWALK: This task parallels task number 071-710-0030 for the AN/PVS-5 in STP 7-11BCHM14-SM-TG, evaluation guide steps 1, 3, 4 pending revision of the Soldier's manual for the AN/PVS-7 series NVG and has been modified for the EIB test with the addition of the time standard.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: Field table, night vision goggles (AN/PVS-7B), and FB Form 20-37-R.

SITE SETUP: At the test site, provide all equipment and materials given in task conditions statement. Have the task performed in an outside or field environment that is free of lights. Provide the goggles in their soft carrying case when given to the Soldier.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

"Let me have your attention. At this point, you will be required to operate night vision goggles AN/PVS-7B into operation. You will:

1. Perform pre-operational checks.
2. Operate the goggles (head-mounted mode).
3. Shut down and store the goggles.

The task must be performed within 5 minutes."

"Begin"

1. Candidates performs pre-operational checks.

a. Ensured rotary switch is in OFF position.
b. Installed batteries.
C. Removed eyepiece and objective lens caps.
d. Placed headmount assembly on head and adjusted for a comfortable and secure fit.
e. Inserted goggles onto headmount carriage until a definite click is heard.

2. Operate the goggles (head-mounted mode)."

a. Activated the rotary switch to the ON position.
b. Adjusted the focus mechanisms for sharpest view.
c. Activated IR illuminator by turning and pulling out on knob, deactivated IR illuminator.

3. Shut down and store the goggles.

a. Moved rotary switch to OFF position
b. Remove goggles from headgear
c. Remove all protective lenses, if attached
d. Replaced all lens caps
e. Removed batteries from goggles and secure battery compartment hatch
f. Placed batteries, headmount assembly, and goggles in proper positions within carrying case

Allow the candidate to proceed for 5 minutes and say:

"Stop."

Point S-1-B

Task 1: Operate a Night Vision Sight AN/PVS-4

TASK CONDITIONS: Given an AN/PVS-4 with daylight cover in its carrying case, complete with batteries.

TEST STANDARDS: Correctly place the AN/PVS-4 into and out of operation within 5 minutes.

SOLDIER'S MANUAL CROSSWALK: This task parallels task number 071-315-0003 in STP 7-11BCHM14-SM-TG, and has been modified for the EIB test with the addition of the time standard.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR POINT: Field table, night vision sight (AN/PVS-4) with daylight cover, batteries, carrying case, and FB Form 20-39-R.

SITE SETUP: At the test site, provide all equipment and materials given in the task conditions statement. Have the task performed in an outside or field environment that is free of lights. Provide the sights in their carrying case when given to the Soldier.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

"Let me have your attention. At this point, you are required to operate a night vision sight AN/PVS-4. You will:

1. Remove the sights from the carrying case.
2. Install the batteries.
3. Turn the ON-OFF/tube brightness control to ON.
4. Turn the ON-OFF/reticle brightness control to ON.
5. Performs after-operation procedures.

The task must be performed within 5 minutes."

Steps 1 and 2 are to be executed in sequence.

"Begin."

Candidates does the following:

1. Remove sight from the carrying case.

2. Install the batteries.

a. Place the ON-OFF/tube brightness switch to OFF
b. Place the ON-OFF/reticle grightness switch to OFF
c. Remove the battery caps (two each)
d. Insert the batteries (two each) correctly: the raised ends are negative (-) and these terminals face into the caps. Screw caps over batteries onto NVD.

3. Turn the ON-OFF/tube brightness control to ON, look into NVD, adjust picture brightness.

4. Turn the ON-OFF/reticle brightness control to ON, look into NVD and adjust reticle brightness.

5. Perform after-operation procecures:

a. Turn the ON-OFF/tube brightness control to OFF
b. Turn the ON-OFF/reticle brightness control to OFF
c. Remove the batteries
d. Replace the sight in the carrying case

Allow the candidate to proceed for 5 minutes and say:

"Stop."


Station S Pre-Test
1. Grid coordinate GL 1234 5678, what does GL refer to?

2. You are plotting GL 1234 5678, what are the first two numbers measured?

3. What kind of grid coordinate is this?

4. An 8-digit coordinate is accurate to ___ meters?

5. You have plotted two 8 digit coordinates, you are at the first one and must land navigate to the second. How do you measure this grid azimuth with a protractor?

6. You now have a grid azimuth of 135 degrees. Why can't you use that setting on your compass?

7. Your grid azimuth is 135 degrees. You must convert to a magnetic azimuth, where do you find the G-M angle to do this?

8. Your G-M angle is 7 degrees to the west, so magnetic north is 7 degrees left of your grid north. What rule do you use to convert 135 degrees grid to magnetic?

9. What does LARS stand for?

10. If your G-M is 7 degrees to the west, and your grid azimuth is 135, what is your magnetic azimuth?

SITE SETUP: At test site, provide all equipment and materials given in the task conditions statement. Have the task performed in an outside or field environment free of lights (Darkened tent etc.). Provide the goggles in their carrying case when given to the Soldier.
