ANDREW LOGAN
BIO
Andrew Logan is, and has been for the best part of a quarter of a century, a phenomenal figure in London life, and one of the most remarkable artists as well.  He is a real mirror of our times and has brought great happiness to many people.
The Alternative Miss World is only one aspect of his creative activities, which refract and reflect the past, the present and the future in fantastic objects of all sizes that decorate the body and make the world feel a better place to live in.  Andrew's work is the art of popular poetry and metropolitan glamour.  It is an art which resounds with the exuberant excess of a Busby Berkeley musical.  It would be decadent if it were not so cheerful.  As it is, it provides the sort of glamorous moment of celebration for which many of us harbour unspoken longings.  A Logan extravaganza is simultaneously absurd, funny and moving.  His nature reserve includes fauna, flora, planets and gods.
Since its beginnings, Logan's work has depended on the inventive use of whatever was to hand.  With flair and fantasy he transformed real objects into their new and different versions.  During his student days in Oxford, in the early 60's, he furnished his room with papier-mâché flowers and a bedspread of plastic grass.  Blue sky with fluffy white clouds was painted on walls and ceiling.  Sun was not depicted, since it was outside the room shining in.  There was nothing in the room that did not have an existence outside it.  Logan made no additions to the repertoire of things in the world, but everything was transformed.  Many years later, elegant grottos, towers, crown jewels, indoor lakes and green hills in place of settees, were still being made from whatever was available.  The setting and the objects  continued to refer to external reality, and even the goddesses represented individuals in Logan's circle of friends.  Plastic and scrap are still his raw materials: cotton wool has gone, papier-mâché was gradually replaced by plaster and resin, and broken mirror - discovered by chance 22 years ago - has become a hallmark of his work.  Logan continues to bring nature indoors and to meddle with scale.
He has moved between the fields of architecture (in which he qualified), decoration, sculpture, stage design and the organisation of various 'alternative activities'.  Apart from the 'Miss World', these have included drama, opera, parades and festivals.   Andrew's work is on display in The National Portrait Gallery - London, The Australian Gallery of National Art - Sidney, Arts Council of Great Britain - London, National Museums & Galleries - Liverpool, Monterrey Glass Museum - Monterrey Mexico, Metropolitan Museum - New York.  And who else but Andrew Logan could open up his own museum, the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture, and carry it off with his customary flair.
