MELISSA CAPLAN THE FACE  +  NEW SOUNDS NEW STYLES

For Melissa, the summer of 1980 was her baptism by fire. as one of the original Blitz Kids,  her reputations had hitched a free lift on the backs of Steve Strange, Spandau Ballet and Toyah Willcox - but she made darned sure the word Caplanesque earned its own identity.   Even at the Blitz' height, her designs distinguished themselves trom the latest group fad. Caplanesque came to mean layers and poppers and wrapovers and clever coordinations of colours with weaves, all creating a silhouette which intimidate the fashion press by remaining, as they say of music on Radio 3, ucompromising.                You can see her ideas in loads of other people's work.
