Jury Convicts Singer Who Defecated

Milwaukee - A rock singer who defecated on stage and tossed excrement at his audience was convicted yesterday by a jury that rejected his argument of artistic freedom.

Kevin Michael Allin, known as G.G. Allin, lead singer of the defunct rock group Toilet Rockers, was convicted of provoking a disturbance during the incident two years ago.

"They're trying to kill rock 'n' roll, but they can't do it because I'm the king of the underground rock 'n' roll," he said.

Goldberg had argued that Allin, 34, of Ann Arbor, Mich., was a serious performer whose Feb. 28, 1989 performance had artistic value. He said other avant-garde artists have incorporated human excrement into their work, a practice known as scatology.

Defense witness Jeffery Halley, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Texas at San Antonio, testified Wednesday that Allin's performance was "definitely acceptable" to an audience that paid to see it and knew what to expect.

"You can't judge art by standards of it being offensive," Halley said.
