WHAT IS ANAUHAC? When the ancestors of the Azteca/Mexica people left Aztlan and journeyed South to create the beautiful city of Tenochtitlan (modern day Mexico City)they spoke the Nahuatl language. To this day, Nahuatl is one of the largest language groups spoken by the Native peoples of North America. Anauhac is a Nahuatl word meaning "the land surrounded by water" and is an original name of Turtle Island (North America)
The Anahuac Talking Circle was started by a few young Raza that saw a need in the community for self expression through art and poetry. We do not see a need for self promotion, we exsist to help our raza. We believe that poetry and art gives our gente a way to express our feelings, dreams and frustions in a positive light rather than a in self destructive way. In July of 2002 the Anahuac Talking Circle teamed up with the students in the Summer Youth Employment Program at El Centro de la Raza. The rest of this story is yet to be written so stay tuned.
