he does not anticipate a previous decision upholding the law to be overturned by this case.
"It's been upheld by (U.S. District) Judge (Earl H.) Carroll and I have no reason to believe his decision will be overturned," he said.
Michael Di Cavalcante, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said that though the outcome was disappointing, his clients Will continue to pursue the lawsuit. Even though Strand ruled on the temporary restraining order, the businesses continue to seek a permanent ban on the law.
Attorneys for several adult busi- nesses have also filed for a stay of the law with the 9th US. Circuit Court of Appeals. But -a ruling from that court could take a few weeks, House said.
I The, appeal on the initial action filed with the 9th Circuit could take several months to be decided, House said.
Sgt. Jeff Halstead, a Phoenix police spokesman, said the law will be enforced. He said the police hope that business owners comply without police intervention.
However the department's Organized Crime Bureau has been trained in enforcement of the new law and will be ready to investigate any club, bar or cabaret suspected of violating the law.
Precinct neighborhood enforcement teams will also be ready to inspect adult bookstores.
"We don't want this to be forced compliance," Halstead said.
Halstead said he has not been told of any specific crackdown plans set. Enforcement will be treated like other similar statutes, with spot checks and follow-through on complaints, Halstead said.
Similar laws already exist in other states, and Glendale has been enforcing the law since it was passed by the Legislature in 1998.
