Governor John Marshall Slaton (1866-1955) Governor Slaton served the State of Georgia in many capacities. He was a legal reformer and a popular governor until he commuted the sentence of Leo Frank, a man wrongly accused of murder of a factory girl. A witness in recent years finally exonerated Mr. Frank. A movie about this incident, "The Murder of Mary Phagan," featured Jack Lemmon playing Governor Slaton. The governor's action in commuting the sentence of a Northern Jew was the subject of much imflammatory press, and his plans for running for the Presidency were dashed. |
