Governor Slaton served the State of Georgia in many capacities. He was a legal reformer and a popular governor until he commuted the sentence of Leo Frank, a man wrongly accused of murder of a factory girl. A witness in recent years finally exonerated Mr. Frank. A movie about this incident, "The Murder of Mary Phagan," featured Jack Lemmon playing Governor Slaton. The governor's action in commuting the sentence of a Northern Jew was the subject of much imflammatory press, and his plans for running for the Presidency were dashed.
Sometimes referred to as General Elmore, John Archer Elmore--who served during the Revolutionary War as a very young soldier--obtained his military rank from the militia. Elmore County, Alabama is named for him. His niece, Louisa Williams, married Rev. John DuBois.
