GREAT OLD AMUSEMENT PARKS

On a hot summer day, there may be no better place on earth than a traditional amusement park. A place where you can hop on a classic wooden coaster, reach for the ring as you whirl by on the merry-go-round, or cool down on the Caterpillar. In this delightful documentary, you get to visit some of America's most charming parks, from Lake Compounce in Connecticut to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California. You get to gallop on the Derby Racer as Playland, go with the flow on the Boat Chute at Lake Winnepesaukah, and rock on Deno's Wonder Wheel at Coney Island. And of course there are coasters, including Thunderbolt at Kennywood, the Cyclone at Astroland, the Raven at Holiday World, and San Diego's Giant Dipper! GREAT OLD AMUSEMENT PARKS is a celebration of places like Whalom Park in Massachusetts and Oaks Park in Oregon, Pennsylvania's idyllic Idlewild and Ohio's spectacular Cedar Point. LIFE WAS A LARK AT WILLOW GROVE PARK

SORRY, TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK!

Willow Grove Park (located near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was perhaps the grandest and most elegant of all the trolley-company-inspired amusement parks in the country. A venture by the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, Willow Grove Park opened on Memorial Day in 1896. Patrons were serenaded by the music of John Philip Sousa and Victor Herbert, while thrill seekers flocked to such attractions as `Mountain Scenic Railway' or the `Captive Flying Machine.' Throughout the years, Willow Grove Park continued to grow with a mixture of fun and relaxation. Visitors were offered the chance to leave the worries of everyday life behind and lose themselves for a few hours in a world of fantasy. In the late 1950's, following the establishment of Disneyland, urban amusement parks began to die. The nation's taste in recreation was changing too rapidly for parks like Willow Grove to survive. After a brief life as "Six Gun Territory" Theme Park, Willow Grove expired at the end of the 1975 season. Now Willow Grove Park exists only in the minds of those that are old enough to remember. This historical video is for those with fond memories of the park, and to help the rest of us to rediscover this great Philadelphia institution.

REDISCOVER THE EXCITEMENT - WEST VIEW PARK

In 1905, T. M. Harton and Fred Henninger leased 18.5 acres of swamp land on the Bellevue trolley loop to build West View Amusement Park. For 71 years West View provided generations of Pittsburghers with fond memories of family and school picnics, "Danceland" evenings, and the childish laughter and excited screams from its amusement rides. Remember driving down Route 19 into West View and seeing the familiar white horseshoe curve of The Dips? How about the midway Carousel, the Racing Whippet, Kiddieland, Talkie Temple, or the Haunted House? Danceland's popularity ranged from big band sounds of Harry James, Guy Lombardo, and Vaughn Monroe to George Bodnar's over-19 record dances, and appearances by Bobby Goldsboro and "The Rolling Stones." West View Park's decline and demise was due to lost patronage and increasing pressure of real estate value over entertainment value. Only the memories and photos now remain. This historical film recaptures the life and times of this Pittsburgh institution. Return with us to West View Park to rediscover the excitement.
