Keeper of the Butterflies

Part One

"You're it, Baby Mimic!" cried Baby Lofty. Baby Mimic stood there for a second, puzzled. She couldn't decide who to chase.

"Don't just stand there!" Baby Love Melody said, "chase someone!"

Baby Mimic closed her eyes and turned around, then opened them again. Baby Lofty was the first pony she saw, so she started chasing her. Baby Mimic ran like wildfire, but she just couldn't catch up. Finally she was almost in reach of Baby Lofty. They were nearing the river, but Baby Mimic didn't even notice; she almost had Baby Lofty. pictureSuddenly there was a scream and a splash as Baby Mimic went right into the river.

The other baby ponies got there just in time to see her being washed downstream.

"What do I do? What do I do?" thought Baby Mimic, as she thrashed in the water. Suddenly a wave lifted her up

and coasted her to land. She got to her feet and shook the water out of her mane and tail.

"Whew, that was a close one," she said. Baby Mimic looked around, trying to figure out which way to head back.

Not far from the river, she saw a giant butterfly laying on the ground. "I wonder if it fell in too," thought Baby

Mimic, going over to look at it. When she got close though, she saw it wasn't a butterfly, but a tiny pony about her

size, with butterfly wings.

"Baby Mimic! Baby Mimic!" called the baby ponies, running up to her.

"I'm fine," Baby Mimic said, "But look what I found!" They all crowded around to look at the butterfly pony.

"What happened to it?" whispered Baby Fifi.

"Did it drown?" said Baby Love Melody.

"I don't know," said Baby Mimic.

Suddenly Baby Gusty cried out, "Look! It's moving." All the baby ponies jumped back.

The glittery butterfly wings moved, and the little yellow pony opened her eyes. "Where...am I?" she asked. Then her eyes closed again and she laid her head back.

"Quick!" yelled Baby Fifi, "someone go for help!"

"I will," said Baby Lofty. She took a running leap and headed off toward Paradise Estate. All the baby ponies could do now was wait.

Part Two

Sweet Stuff was the first to see Baby Lofty.

"What is it? What's wrong?" Sweet Stuff asked her.

Baby Lofty caught her breath and said, "By the river...pony...others...follow me."

Sweet Stuff rushed inside and called Gusty, Fifi, Love Melody, Mimic, Gingerbread, and Magic Star together. They followed Baby Lofty back to the river. By this time, the baby ponies had discoverd two more of the odd butterfly ponies.

"What's wrong with them?" Gingerbread asked.

"We don't know," said Baby Fifi.

"Quick! Let's get them to Paradise Estate and see what we can do." Two ponies helped pick up each of the little butterfly ponies. They got the ponies back and tried to revive them. Nothing worked. One of the green butterfly ponies raised its head finally, for a moment, and said, "The Keeper...turned...on us," and then sank back to sleep.

"What do we do?" said Lofty.

Gingerbread thought, then said, "I bet Megan would know."

North Star stamped her foot. "She sure would." She and Wind Whistler took off to get Megan and bring her back.

"I hope we're not too late," Mimic said.

Part Three

Megan and her cousin Dolly were out riding horses. Suddenly, a pink and a blue dot appeared in the sky. Soon Wind Whistler and North Star appeared. Megan looked from Dolly's gaping mouth to Wind Whistler's wide eyes.

 "Megan..." Wind Whistler panted.

Dolly's mouth dropped further. "They talk!"

Megan looked worriedly to Wind Whistler, "What's wrong?"

"Megan, it's urgent. You gotta come quick."

"Okay. Dolly, if you could ride the horses back while I go..."

"No way," Dolly said. "This is too cool."

Megan sighed. "Okay. We'll both ride back. Come on." She led the way, with Dolly behind her and Wind Whistler and North Star following up.

When the horses were put up, Megan hopped on Wind Whistler's back. "Dream Valley, here we come."

"Wait!" Dolly cried. "Let me go too."

Megan thought, then nodded. "Okay. Hop on and let's go!"

Dolly hopped on North Star's back. "What an adventure this is going to be," Dolly thought.

Part Four

Megan, Dolly, Wind Whistler, and North Star were greeted by loud shouts of welcome when they touched down at Paradise Estate.

"Megan, we're so glad you're here!" said Magic Star.

"But who's your friend?" asked Gingerbread, nodding at Dolly.

"Everyone, this is my cousin, Dolly. Dolly, meet the Little Ponies!"

"Hey, Dolly, hey, Dolly!" the baby ponies cried.

Gusty greeted her, "Welcome to Dream Valley, Dolly."

 "Thank you," Dolly said.

After all the introductions were over, Megan got down to business.

 "Okay, what's happened?"

"Follow me," Magic Star said, leading the way to Paradise Estate. As they neared the doors, Sweet Stuff burst out.

"One of them has woke up!" she cried. They ran the rest of the way.

In the room, a small yellow pony was slowly rising to her feet, butterfly wings clapping in the air in her effort. Megan ran to her and helped her up.

"Thank you," the little pony said.

 "My name is Megan."

"I am Little Flitter. I..." but then she spotted the other two. "Cool Breeze! Buzzer!"

 "They're asleep," Mimic said.

"Let them sleep then, for now," Little Flitter said. "Sweet dreams," she whispered to them.

Part Five

"So tell us what happened," Megan said later.

"Well," said Little Flitter, "where we come from, Silver Isle (which really isn't an isle, just a piece of land jutting into the sea), there is a tradition. Through the ages, we have had a human watch over our Isle. This title has been passed from generation to generation, until this last one."

 "What happened?" Mimic asked.

"He turned on us, decided to use us for experiments."

 "What?" Magic Star cried out.

"Sadly yes." Little Flitter hung her head. "He wants our wings. He wants to know how he can get them."

 "That's insane!" Gingerbread exclaimed.

"We'll be glad to help in any way needed," Megan said.

"Thank you so much," Little Flitter replied.

Just then Sweet Stuff came running back out. "They're awake! They're awake!" she cried.

Sure enough, when they all got there, two little green ponies were stumbling to their feet.

"Buzzer! Cool Breeze! Are you all right?" Little Flitter cried as she ran to meet them.

Buzzer nodded her head. "But where are we?" she asked.

Magic Star answered her. "This is Paradise Estate. I'm Magic Star. This is Sweet Stuff, Mimic, Gingerbread, North Star, Wind Whistler, Gusty, Megan, and...and..."

 "Dolly," Dolly said.

"Nice to meet you all," Cool Breeze giggled.

"Where are the rest of us?" Buzzer asked.

Little Flitter shook her head. "We're the only ones that escaped."

Buzzer gasped, "We gotta rescue them."

"And rescue them we will!" said Lofty, coming in.

Part Six

Little Flitter led the way, with the pegasi following behind, and the unicorns and earth ponies following below. The small butterfly ponies were not fast flyers, so it was easier for those on the ground to keep up. Sweet Stuff had stayed at the nursery to watch the baby ponies.

"Wow," thought Dolly, as the wind whipped through her hair, "this is great. And to think they almost wouldn't let me come!"

Megan glanced back at Dolly. "I sure hope nothing happens," she thought. "Aunt Ruth would kill me."

And not too far behind, a tiny green unicorn was trying her hardest to keep up.

Part Seven

Before them stood a large gray stony fortress. There was no way in.

"What do we do now?" asked Gusty.

"Well, we can't just stand around here," said Gingerbread. "Let's find a way in!"

There was a forest around the fortress, and while the others began searching, Dolly wandered off a little ways by herself. She found a stump to sit on and think. Just as she was getting comfortable, a tiny rustle sounded in the brush beside her. Dolly froze as a tiny green head popped out.

"Ah! Who are you!" they both said at the same time.

Dolly giggled as the baby pony shook the leaves out of her hair. "Wait," she said, "I saw you at Paradise Estate. What are you doing here?"

"I've come to help," the baby pony said, holding her head up. "I'm Baby Mimic. You must be Megan's cousin, Dolly."

"Wow, you're the first one to even remember my name," Dolly said. "I don't think they like me too much."

"Sure they do," Baby Mimic said. "They just gotta get to know you."

 "I guess so."

"What're they doing now?" Baby Mimic asked.

"Oh, they're trying to find a way in," Dolly replied.

"Oh, that's easy. Look what I found!" Baby Mimic led Dolly through the brush to a place where a large square of wood rested in the ground.

Dolly's eyes grew wide. "A trap door!" she gasped. "Quick. Let's go get the others."

They reached the edge of the forest, but the clearing around the fortress was empty.

"Where'd they go?" Baby Mimic asked.

"I don't know," Dolly answered, "but I think that trap door might have some answers. Hurry, let's get back." They raced back through the woods to the trapdoor. Dolly pried it open and finally removed the wood cover. A dark hole loomed ominously before them.

"Dolly, I'm afraid of the dark," Baby Mimic whimpered.

"Don't worry, I'll be there with you. I'll go first." Dolly sat on the edge of the tunnel, swinging her legs out over the blackness. "Well, here goes nothing," she said and jumped.

She thudded on the ground after about four feet. "Whew! Come on, Baby Mimic. I'll catch you."

Baby Mimic took a look at the dark hole, closed her eyes, and jumped. She landed safely in Dolly's arms.

"Oof!" Dolly said, putting Baby Mimic down. "I wish we had a lamp or something."

"Maybe I can help," Baby Mimic said. She squeezed her eyes shut, and concentrated. Soon her horn started glowing.

 "Perfect!" Dolly said.

 "Neat, huh?"

"Pretty cool," Dolly agreed. "Come on, let's see if we can find a way in."

So they entered the tunnel, Baby Mimic's glowing horn lighting the way.

Part Eight

The tunnel grew wider as they approached the end. They rounded a corner, and before them stood a large gray stone door. Baby Mimic's light suddenly gave out, and she fell to the ground.

"Baby Mimic, are you okay?" Dolly cried.

 "I'm...fine, just...just tired. Help...the others."

"Shh, rest a minute," Dolly whispered. She put her ear to the stone door, and almost had to pull back as a wicked laugh sounded loudly from inside.

"Ponies! Ponies! My, you will make fine statures for my castle! A fine catch, a fine catch!" A yawn sounded. "But my, I'm tuckered now. I think I'll take a nap."

"You'll never get away with this!" It was Wind Whistler's voice.

"We'll see." There was a final laugh, then the slamming of the doors.

Dolly could hear chains rattling now from the inside. She grabbed hold of the stone door and pushed. It moved an inch. She strained and pushed...two inches. "This isn't working," she muttered. "Must be caught on something." She pushed again. The door moved another inch, then slid open. "Bingo."

She glanced at Baby Mimic, who was sound asleep. "I hope she'll be okay," Dolly thought. Then she stepped through the door. There were ponies lining one wall, chained up. One whole section was made up of butterfly ponies.

"I'm here to help," she told them. Then she noticed the unicorns were gone. "Where are the unicorns?" she asked.

"They're over there behind a forcefield," Wind Whistler whispered. Dolly looked over to the other side of the room. Sure enough, there were the unicorns. They were surrounded by a small metal fence. An almost invisible bubble seemed to hang over them. dolly hurried over. She knew the unicorns would be able to help.

"Dolly, there's a button there, on the side. Quick, press it," Gusty said.

Dolly looked around and finally saw it. She pressed the button. With a great WHOOOSH, Dolly was thrown aside. The bubble disappeared.

"Dolly, are you okay?" asked Mimic.

 "I'm fine. Quick, the others!"

The unicorns knew just what to do. With a small burst of light from their horns, they broke each lock. All was done quietly. Megan and the ponies rushed over to where Dolly was getting to her feet.

 "Are you okay?" Megan asked.

 "I'm fine," Dolly replied.

"Thank you for rescuing us," Wind Whistler said.

 "I had help. I...Baby Mimic!"

 "What?" Mimic cried.

"Baby Mimic. She helped me. She's sleeping right outside the door."

Just then a small green head popped in from the tunnel. "Hi, Mommy."

"Baby Mimic, what are you doing here?" Mimic rushed up to hug her.

"Everyone, we gotta get out of here," Dolly said.

"Butterfly ponies first," said Gingerbread. "I believe they've had enough of this place."

A small purple one spoke up, "Indeed, we have!"

Little Flitter came up to Dolly. "Thank you again for rescuing us, Dolly."

 "You're welcome," Dolly said.

Little Flitter led the way out. Just as the last butterfly pony left, the door of the room slammed open.

"My ponies!" the Keeper cried. He grabbed a nearby gun and shot at Gingerbread. She jumped out of the way, but the wall behind her turned to crystal.

Then the Keeper noticed Dolly. "You!" he shouted and aimed at her. As he shot, Dolly grabbed a big piece of metal from some experiment. She held it up in front of her. The shot bounced back and hit the Keeper. He turned into solid crystal.

"Three cheers for Dolly!" Lofty cried.

 Cheers rose up from everyone.

"All right, let's get to the surface!" Gusty said. There was a rush as they all entered the tunnel. The unicorns lit the way.

As they all climbed out, Megan patted Dolly on the back. "Congratulations," she said.

 "Thank you," Dolly replied.

"I was worried about you," Megan said.

 "I know."

"Back to Ponyland!" Lofty called out.

pictureBaby Mimic came up to Dolly. "Momma said it was okay if I rode with you."

Dolly looked over at Mimic, who nodded her head. "If it's fine with North Star," Dolly said.

"Fine with me," North Star said. "Hop on!"

The air was full of shouts as the butterfly ponies flew among everyone.

"Let's go!" Megan called. "North Star, you have the honor of leading."

"Gladly," North Star said, jumping into the air. "All right!"

Part Nine

Sweet Stuff was outside watching the baby ponies play tag. She heard shouting and cheering, and then a whole group of giant butterflies seem to be flying in, with North Star in the lead. As North Star touched down, Sweet Stuff noticed Baby Mimic in Dolly's arms. "Baby Mimic! Oh, I was so worried," she cried, running up to nuzzle Baby Mimic.

"She's fine, just a little tired," said Dolly.

Gusty ran up, panting. "Beat the others! I think all this celebration calls for a victory dinner!"

Part Ten

The next morning, everyone met, rested and refreshed. (Not to mention, well-fed).

Little Flitter called for everyone's attention. "We've been discussing it among ourselves," she said, "and we would like Dolly to be our new Keeper, if she would accept." All the butterfly ponies' eyes were on Dolly.

"I would love to," Dolly said. "Thank you for this priviledge, but..."

 "But?" Cool Breeze asked.

"I have to go back home. They're waiting for me there."

"Say, you know what?" said Magic Star, "they can stay here with us at Paradise Estate! Then they wouldn't need a Keeper."

"Hmmm," said Little Flitter, looking at all the other butterfly ponies. "What do you all think?'

 They nodded their heads.

"Fine with me!" Buzzer cried out.

Little Flitter giggled. "I think it's settled then," she said.

"Well, Dolly, I guess we need to head back."

"It was nice to meet you, Dolly," Lofty said.

Baby Mimic ran up to Dolly. "Bye Dolly. Come back soon. Please?" She looked up at Dolly, her large green eyes questioning.

Dolly hesitated. "I will if..." She glanced at Megan.

pictureMegan smiled. "She sure will."

"Yay!" Baby Mimic said, leaping into the air. Dolly gave a relieved smile.

Megan and Wind Whistler, Dolly and North Star hopped into the air. As they soared over the rainbow, Dolly waved bye until Paradise Estate was lost behind the clouds.
