born in the mississippi river valley of minnesota, An was raised in the suburbs of minneapolis and saint paul with frequent trips to southern california during the summer months. after high school An attended minnesota state university, mankato where he received his degree in geography. at the age of twenty-two An began his international journeys, most notably to london, england where he took up classes and studied at saint mary's college, strawberry hill. as a geographer he found that international travel suited him well. his thirst for cultural and economic geography urged him foward from that point on.
