Another law enforcement sounds good scheme and does nothing to prevent crime!

7-6-2007 Florida:
New local online crimefighting websites |
.Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd and the Polk County Sheriff's Office have unveiled two new crime fighting tools that families can use in the comfort of their own home.
On Friday, Sheriff Grady Judd announced the launching of the Polk County Sheriff's Office new “Offenderwatch” web site and MySpace account. Sheriff Judd said that the “Offenderwatch” is only one new tool that families have in fighting crime.
The goal of the MySpace account is twofold; first, it will be a reminder to those who visit how important it is to practice safe online activity; and second, it will remind online predators, Polk County's children have included PCSO detectives on their “friend list.”
Once the PCSO has been added to a “friend list,” detectives can visit a user's page and help parents keep an eye out for potential danger. “But don't expect the detectives to do all the work,” said Sheriff Judd. “Just as easily as we can be added to a social network, we can be removed. Moms and dads must continue to monitor online activity closely.”
Because a user is the only individual who can provide permission for others to visit an individual MySpace account, Sheriff Judd invites parents to sit down with their children and include parents, family members, and the PCSO on their “friend list.”

.Unless I am missing something this is another hair-brain Law Enforcement scheme to make them look good.
It goes something like this, LE sets up its own MySpace account under the name of the Polk County Police Department.
Then anyone on MySpace, living anywhere, can attach that Polk County PD account as a MySpace Friend. Allegedly this is supposed to scare off a pedophile that may happen along. This is akin to holding up a cross to ward off vampires.
However, the police IMPLY that they CAN visit that user's page and help parents keep an eye out for potential danger. Then they say, but don't expect the police to do all the work, parents still need to watch.
So, what is it they will be doing regularly? There is a big difference between "Can Do" and "Will do" on some frequency. If there is anything that they "Can Do" it can only happen after initial contacts have been made.
What is so interesting about this is, there have been more recent cases of police molesting children than there has been of registered sex offenders molesting children.
I probably should not call this a "Sounds Good" scheme because it doesn't sound good at all, its just another scheme to make the public feel good!
