Mythology: | Son of Pelops and Hippodamia, grandson of Tantalus, brother of Atreus and Crisipo. Helped Atreus to murder Crisipo and then fled with him to Mycenae, where their brother-in-law gave them the lands of Midea to live in. When Euristeo, brother of their protector, died, Atreus took posesion of Mycenae, arguing that the one that owned the golden fleece that Hermes had sent to seed discord, would be the righteous king of Mycenae (the golden fleece had belonged to a ram that Atreus should have completely sacrificed to Artemis. By his refusal to do so, Artemis made his wife give birth to a sickly child, who died soon after, and favoured Thyestes from then on). Thus, Thyestes seduced his brother's wife, Aerope, and with her help took the golden fleece, that was his for right -the ram belonged to his half of the flock-, and so became the king of Mycenae. But Zeus was on Atreus' side, and after the brothers had promised that if the sun hid in the east Atreus would become the king, he made the Moon and Sun change their courses, so Atreus became king and vanished Thyestes from Mycenae. Thyestes then sent Plistenes, Atreus' son, to kill his father, but Atreus kill him unwittingly. When learning the truth, Atreus summoned his brother under the excuse of sharing the kingdom. But before he arrived, Atreus killed Thyestes' three sons and cooked them, serving them to the unknowing Thyestes, that cursed the house of Atreus when learning the truth. Then, Atreus fell in love with Pelopia, who was Thyestes' daughter, and married her, adopting her child, Aegisto, whose real father was Thyestes. After some time, Menelao and Agammenomn, Atreus' sons, found Thyestes and took him to Mycenae, where he was put into prison. Atreus sent Aegisto to kill him, but Thyestes recognised the sword and told the boy and his mother the truth. Pelopia, when learning about the incestuous nature of her child -she had believed it had been the product of a rape by a stranger-, killed herself with her father's sword. Thyestes was horrorized, but then took the sword and told Aegisto to take it to Atreus and tell him he had killed him. Atreus was so happy when hearing the news, that he immediately made an offering to the gods by the seashore, where both Aegisto and Thyestes ambushed him and killed him, Thyestes regaining the crown of Mycenae. The confrontation between the House of Thyestes and the House of Atreus could be simplyfied by the confrontation between two gods, Artemis on Thyestes' side, and Zeus on Atreus' (the matriarcal religion colliding with the patriarcal). |
