Mnemosyne

Faded scars on body speak
Of deeper scars the heart holds new.
Pain and loss I did not seek,
Curse my thoughts with mem'ries of you.

The body's pain fades with passing days,
Years come soon, and sooner go.
The wound held in memory in myriad ways,
Summoned, returns, with pain to show.

Scars from pain are not all,
For pleasure, too, the heart can score.
Marks of joy or those of gall,
Which grave deeper in mem'ries store?

Your laughter still my ears can hear,
Harking still my love for you.
Your face in dreams I seek, yet fear,
Love unburied wakes pain anew.

Lost in time and mists of age,
Bittersweet memories still return.
Still loth I am to turn the page.
Let love's heat fade and memory spurn.
