Research question: How much does the provider’s willingness to listen to the patient and provide thorough treatment and explanations about the patient’s needs affect an individual’s perception of the overall quality of care and services received?

Background: Numerous factors play a role in an individual’s view of quality healthcare. The patient-provider relationship, however, is a very critical part of determining a patient’s overall satisfaction with the perceived quality of healthcare services received. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between an individual’s evaluation of overall quality of care received and the provider’s willingness to do a thorough job of assessing the patient’s needs.

Method: A General Linear Model was used to examine the relationship between the dependent variable, q3j “overall quality of care and services received” and the independent variables: q3e “personal interest in you and your problems”, q3c “thoroughness of treatment received”, q3d “explained medical procedures & tests”, and
q3b “attention to what you had to say”.  Each of these 5 questions were answered using a 5 point bipolar Likert scale and were weighted from poor to excellent.

Results: The descriptive statistics show that overall satisfaction for all 5 questions had a mean of approximately 4.2 on a 5 point scale with a S.D. of about .90.  The frequency tables depict the variance in responses for each of the 5 questions.  The inferential statistics (see “tests of between subject effects”) show that there is a distinct correlation between q3j and q3b, q3c, q3d, q3e.  This relationship is significant to the .001 level which means the possibility of this relationship being due to chance alone is very, very small.
