Gerry and the Pacemakers were the Beatles' nearest competitors in U.K. Like The Beatles they were managed by Brian Epstein, Gerry Marsden and his band had three consecutive number one U.K. hits in 1963, the first with their debut disc "HOW DO YOU DO IT?", and the other with "I LIKE IT," and "YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE."
They worked the same Liverpool/Hamburg circuit as the Beatles, and ran together with them in local popularity.
Their first single was a Mitch Murray tune that Martin had wanted the Beatles to record for their debut, "How Do You Do It?". In fact, The Beatles recorded a version (found on the ANTHOLOGY 1), but they did not want to release it, because they were more interested in recording an own composition in their debut.
