Bye bye Barney
Pilar Marrero
Feliz mes.

Solidarity Demonstration took Place in Prague
A demonstration organized by the Czech Communist
Youth Union (KSM) and the Czech-Cuba Friendship
Association took place on Wednesday 12th
September 2007 in front of the US embassy in the
capital Prague to demand the release of the five
Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in US
prisons.
The Czech activists have joined this protest to
a new international campaign undertaken on the
occasion of the ninth anniversary of the Five's
imprisonment, according to a press release of
the Cuban embassy in Prague.
President of the Czech Communist Youth Union,
Milan Krajca, stated, on behalf of a large
number of people in his country, his commitment
to keep on supporting the cause of the Five.
“Our comrades have been unjustly imprisoned in
the USA for nine years,” KSM chairman Milan
Krajca said. He said the five Cubans were
punished for gaining, in Florida, information on
anti-Cuban plans of terrorist organisations
operating in the region.” “They [the
prisoners] are members of a heroic nation that
has been suffering under U.S. embargo for almost
50 years now,” Krajca said.
Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino,
Fernando Gonzalez, and René Gonzalez, known
worldwide as the Cuban Five, were detained in
1998 for infiltrating right-wing anti-Cuba
organizations based in Florida that have
organized numerous terrorist actions against the
island over the last 45 years causing deaths and
huge damage. The infiltrated pro-terrorist
organisations in Miami in an effort to prevent
the deaths of Cuban and even United States
citizens.
They were charged with espionage and punished
with extremely harsh sentences despite the
antiterrorist nature of their mission. After
nine years in jail, most legal experts around
the world agree there are no grounds to keep
them behind bars.
Many greetings from the Communist Youth Union
(KSM), the Czech Republic. We send you
information on Cuban 5 solidarity demonstration
which took place in front of US embassy in
Prague and some pictures.

Big Daddy "Cane"
September 12, 2007
Sandra Guzman -- New York Post
If the pilot is any
indication, Smits and company are hitting the right notes.
The epic drama - set in modern-day southern Florida - has all the makings of a hit.
In a television season full of geeks, freaks and ugly
nerds, this is a serious drama with a killer cast that is sexy and
talented.
Then there are the themes: politics, money, sex, power
struggles, crime, betrayal and, of course, baseball and mojitos.
It was Brian De Palma, talking about Carlito's
Way, who said that the only difference between the Italian mob and Latin mob was the music - Latinos have more, and better of
it. So, of course, there's music. Lots of it, both Latin and
not. Cane is not necessarily The Sopranos, but it's definitely no Father Knows
Best, either. It chronicles the rivalries and struggles of a wealthy
Cuban-American family, Los Duques, running a successful rum and sugar business
Sandra Guzman is very careful not to mention the Fanjul last name in her
story: the similarities, the legal presence of the Fanjul
hound, Mr. Klock. What kind of journalism is
that? "Latino-Light."

"The Sugar Babies" selected for Screening on Opening Night at Canadian Film Festival!
MONTREAL -- "The Sugar Babies: The Plight of the Children of Agricultural Workers in the Sugar Industry of the Dominican
Republic" ("Les Enfants du Sucre") has been selected to launch the Montreal International Haitian Film Festival (Le Festival International du Film Haitien de Montreal ) on September 19 at 7:00 pm at the Centre Leonardo Da Vinci (8370 Boulevard
Lacordaire, St. Leonard) www.festivalfilmhaitien.com/programme.html
Narrated by award-winning author Edwidge
Danticat, this seemingly controversial film examines the moral price of sugar
--present and past-- from the perspective of the conditions surrounding the children of sugar cane cutters of Haitian ancestry in the Dominican
Republic, and the continuing denial of their basic human
rights. While exposing those who profit from human trafficking and
exploitation, the feature-length documentary film explores the lives of those who live in circumstances that can only be considered modern day
slavery.
Composed of gripping field testimonies and hidden camera footage obtained during 18 months of
documentation, the film also features interviews with Haiti's Ambassador to the United States Raymond Joseph, the
U.S. Department of State's Ambassador John Miller from the Office of Human
Trafficking, renowned anthropologist Sidney
Mintz, as well as a number of experts, and also activists from the
field. Shot in 2005 and 2006 on both sides of the island of
Hispaniola, Europe and the United States, the 99 minute film is in
Spanish, French, Creole and English with versions currently subtitled in English or French for diverse
audiences. Anticipated future versions will be subtitled in
Portuguese, Spanish and Creole.
Though previously shown at venues in New
Orleans, Paris, Miami and Washington D.C., it's Canadian screening represents the film's official "World
Premiere." The film was produced by Siren
Studios, co-produced by The Human Rights Foundation
(New York) and the Hope, Courage and Justice Project
(New Orleans). The film's interactive website will be launched on September 19 concurrent with opening night of the festival and will feature up to date information on field issues as well as preview clips from film,
photos, the director's travel journal, and ways to get
involved!
Other Montreal-based events related to the film festival include a private press screening taking place September 12
(due to security issues, the exclusive media event is by invitation
only), a conference entitled "Sange, Sucre et
Seuer" (Blood, Sweat and Sugar), and a photo exhibit by fine art photographer Celine
Anaya-Gautier.
