STEVE KANALY
Californian STEVE KANALY, born on March 14, 1946, was the only member of his family who focused his career on show business, after graduating at the Van Nuys High School. The VIETNAM War left him mentally exhaust and physically unrecognizable. He was hurt by a bullet in his back and discharged of the Army. He got a job at a country club in CALIFORNIA, as a plate shooting instructor.
STEVE did not take acting seriously until he met at the club, writer-director JOHN MILIUS, then writing a script called APOCALYPSE NOW (F.F.Coppola). MILIUS persuaded him to tell him his war experiences, and offered him a role with no dialogue in his movie BIG WEDNESDAY. Eventually he was introduced to old-timer director JOHN HUSTON, who immediately included him in the cast of his last film, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN, co-starring an actress he would re-unite with, 6 years later, at the DALLAS´s set: VICTORIA PRINCIPAL. “Those days I earned more money than in a whole year. But I spent the next 18 months unemployed and out of luck.”
Later on, he played several roles in other movies, like Pretty Boy Floyd in DILLINGER or Captain Jerome in THE WIND AND THE LION (both of them directed by J. Milius). In 1976, he almost threw in the towel: “Work had been hard to find because I decided not to accept supporting roles, only starring. Later came DALLAS. At first l thought I could play BOBBY EWING. Then I realized that there were not many cowboys on TV so the part of RAY could be more interesting to play.”
Apart from his guest stints on other TV shows, like WALKER TEXAS RANGER, OKAVANGO, ALL MY CHILDREN or the second sequel to DALLAS, STEVE played a psychiatrist in the film FEAR IN A HANDFULL OF DUST, presented at the Cannes Film Festival´84, and directed a few movies and TV shows. Married to BRENT, he is father of 2 daughters, QUINN and EVAN, and live at a ranch in OJAI. He devotes his free time to watercolor painting, shows his work in local galleries and usually donates them for charity auctions. He is considered the most human in real life of all the cast of DALLAS. At first he was hired only for 13 episodes, but they liked him and stayed as one of the regular stars.
“When they decreased money and cut backs in all areas, with new writers, wardrobe, all new faces, they tried to bring in a younger audience by bringing in these young characters. The magic was with the original cast, so it was a steady slide after that.”
STEVE ANSWERED TO PAM´S TWIN SISTER...
...During the Chat Interview of the official web-site ULTIMATE DALLAS:
PTS: I´d love to know the truth about the Jenna-Ray affair, I mean: was it a matter of production to tie up 2 characters left alone or just that they didn´t know if both of you would renew contracts every year?
STEVE: That's pretty funny, 'Pams twin sister', she must be a knockout. I don't know what was going on in the writers mind at that point, Ray was single again , they had already done the Bobby/Jenna story and then she had the child, Bobby's son, now you have the half brother marrying her and raising the son. Ray had a pretty big heart in those days...
IN 2007, STEVE ANSWERED TO TONI...
...During the Chat Interview of the official web-site ULTIMATE DALLAS:
TONI: The scene where you destroy the house you were building for Donna in S. 8 (because of her abortion) is one of the best you did on Dallas. Do you have any memory about that?
STEVE: Toni, that was a challenging morning weather wise, it was 100 degrees and I had a 20 pound sledge hammer. It was 20 takes and I was worn out.
It was a strong storyline and Susan and I developed that together. It was great for Ray to show some emotion I thought.
Nota: From this web-site we would like to express our thanks to STEVE KANALY for his sympathy and respect towards the fans during the Country Music Festival in la Mirande, France, in July´ 2007.
