TRIVIA DOSSIER
By Pam´s Twin Sister
Introduction of the EWING family and the first SOUTHFORK Ranch. Filmed in January of 1978, in one of the hardest winters in Texas´ history. V. PRINCIPAL and all the others cast members used their own clothes due to the low budget. The opening titles of the Mini-series are white, instead of yellow. The sort of incest between uncle and niece (RAY and LUCY) will discreetly be overlooked in the future. Entrance of Bobby´s secretary, Connie, portrayed by another actress. The scene featuring PAM and RAY at the frozen lake, was part of VICTORIA´s audition, which obviously convinced the producers.
Snow-covered outdoor locations are much more visible than in the previous episode. Latin servants are named RAOUL (not written as in Spanish) and FRANCESCA (Italian name that would be replaced by TERESA shortly after). At the final scene, located in a very 70´s disco, the main title can be heard in a disco-style rhythm. This kind of places will be replaced by nightclubs and piano restaurants from 1982 on. The last disco seen on the series will appear in the episodes shot in Vienna.
JULIE, TINA LOUISE´s character, leaves the show temporarily. She will return for two more episodes at mid-season. JULIE is (allegedly) the first lover JR and CLIFF have shared (in such order). First script of one of the DALLAS´s main writers, ARTHUR BERNARD LEWIS (coming from GENERAL HOSPITAL and HAWAII 5-0), and also co-author of both awful DALLAS´s sequels.
In LEE RAINTREE´s novel, this episode is handled much more graphically about violence and sex, and SUE ELLEN is even raped by one of the outsiders. An early tidbit in DALLAS: there are no hurricanes in Texas, but tornadoes. Other tidbits in the Mini-series: palm trees in the streets, the lake behind J.R.´s office window, the uncovered cars in winter, etc. BRIAN DENNEHY is the first supporting actor from DALLAS to become famous and get prestige all thru the years. SUE ELLEN´s scene dressed as MISS TEXAS was played by LINDA GRAY to get the role. This was the first episode written by CAMILLE MARCHETTA, then known as one of the writers responsible for DYNASTY.
The highest rated episode in the Mini-series, and beginning of one of the biggest DALLAS´s traditions, BARBACUES. Appearance of a BARNES´ kin, cousin JIMMY, son of DIGGER´s sister, MAGGIE. SUE ELLEN´s drinking habit is quite obvious by first time at the barbecue. Another historical fact: the script concedes the word to a couple of black characters, SAM and TILLIE, caterers of the barbecue. Few color actors will play on DALLAS speaking more than two dialogue lines. PAM´s fall from the barn and her miscarriage could be considered as the first unofficial cliffhanger in the show.
BOBBY´s death was going to be the end of the mini-series, though the network decided to keep the character alive just thinking DALLAS might become a series. One of the last scenes, featuring PAM, BOBBY and JOCK, was included as a tribute to JIM DAVIS in the episode THE SEARCH. Last appearance of the 6-pillar SOUTHFORK, seemingly due to the owner´s legal situation, who wanted to elude any exposition. The house does not exist any more, it disappeared in a fire. The mini-series has been re-titled by WARNER HOME as “Season 1” in its dvd release, thus changing the concept most of us fans have of the numbering of the Seasons. Dallas Universe does not agree with this nonsense concept.
First two-part episode of the show, which would use this format successfully all through its run, including its ending (in non-USA versions), CONUNDRUM. Return of cousin JIMMY, now played by PHILIP LEVIEN instead of JAMES CANNING. Introduction of LUCY´s parents, GARY and VAL, future stars of spin-off KNOTS LANDING. Now GARY is portrayed by another actor, dark-haired DAVID ACKROYD, before blond SHACKELFORD came in. VAL appears as waitressing in a café called “The Hot Biscuit”, just the same place where LUCY would take a job 7 years later. Besides, DUNCAN FARM debuts, as our 4-pillar eternal SOUTHFORK.
A unique chance to see the EWINGS´ black sheep living with his family at SOUTHFORK. During the rest of the show, he will only do brief visits for such family events as weddings, will readings and funerals. First appearance of Aunt MAGGIE, DIGGER´s sister, played by SARAH CUNNINGHAM. This two-parter and “Return Engagement” on next season, turned out to be DAVID JACOBS´s last collaboration on DALLAS, since he would lead the artistic crew of KNOTS LANDING.
The only guest stint of supersoaps´ diva MORGAN FAIRCHILD as JENNA WADE #1. Inconsistency with PRESLEY´s JENNA: this JENNA is liberal enough to sleep with a married Senator.. JENNA´s ex-husband will appear in Seasons 6 & 7, with the name of RENALDO MARCHETTA, named after the writer and creator of the character: CAMILLE MARCHETTA. After this episode MORGAN FAIRCHILD would land on the FLAMINGO ROAD Pilot, lasting 2 seasons, and then on FALCON CREST and PAPER DOLLS, among other shows.
First episode focused in the EWING patriarch. One of the scenes co-starring MISS ELLIE was also included in THE SEARCH. Debut of BARBARA BABCOCK as LIZ CRAIG, who will be playing PAM´s friend and boss at THE STORE for 4 Seasons, clothes shop inspired in NIEMAN-MARCUS. BABCOCK achieved an EMMY Award for her role on the show HILL STREET BLUES. Upon the actress herself, she was written off the series because she was becoming “much too visible”. This episode´s director, COREY ALLEN, played JAMES DEAN´s contender at the famous night car race in the movie REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.
This episode marked DALLAS´s return to Sunday nights, after being aired on Saturdays. First appearance of PAM´s black CORVETTE with plate EWING 6 in the last scene. Guest star TALIA BALSAM is the daughter of late actor MARTIN BALSAM and GEORGE CLOONEY´s ex-wife. The one night stand between RAY and SUE ELLEN, omitted by some channels, was never mentioned again in the show.
Last appearance of DAVID WAYNE as DIGGER, who will reportedly move to California. He would be replaced by actor KEENAN WYNN on Season 2. One of the few episodes with two credited writers, a rare case on DALLAS, though not on other series, where there is not only a script but also a screenplay (the adaptation for TV) of each of them (e.g. DYNASTY). DALLAS used to have a regular writing team in every season, and hire free-lancers once in awhile. This habit ended right after the Dream Season.
One of the unusual episodes focusing on LUCY. GREG EVIGAN, to be the lead actor on B. J. AND THE BEAR and MY TWO DADS, guest-stars. In one of the scenes, LUCY lip-syncs a country-and-western song at a bar contest. LUCY´s 17th birthday was another of the SOUTHFORK celebrations on DALLAS´s Season 1.
The last episode shot on location near and in the town of Dallas. Debuts MEG GALLAGHER as secretary LOUELLA LEE (named after the show´s future writer and assistant for LEONARD KATZMAN) and DON STARR, though not playing his usual role, Oil Baron JORDAN LEE. Also first appearance of the fundraising association D.O.A. (for “Daughters of Alamo”) which include MISS ELLIE and SUE ELLEN, and, later one, MARILEE, MAVIS, CALLY and KIMBERLY CRYDER. During the scene featuring this group, you can notice the first hint of the latent attraction between SUE ELLEN and CLIFF.
Debut of the SOUTHFORK set at MGM Studios. From this episode on, the filming will be done on stage or L.A. outdoors. The story revolves around the first ever accident in DALLAS´s history, the EWING plane´s in this case. One of the scenes features PAM wearing a hat, something that will strangely be seen again, unlike other women on the show, such as SUE ELLEN, LUCY, MARILEE or DONNA. An irony, given the meaning of PAMELA´s name in Spanish (=sun hat). The writing team of DC and RICHARD FONTANA, belonged to the usual crew of the STAR TREK saga, as well as others of the same genre, like LOGAN´S RUN, BABYLON 5 and EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT. They only wrote one more DALLAS´s episode: “The Dove Hunt”.
First episode written by the future DALLAS´s guru, LEONARD KATZMAN. Playing a casual lover of J.R.´s, appears LIBERTY GODSHALL, actress and future writer of shows like THIRTYSOMETHING or ONCE AND AGAIN. The storyline leads to believe that SUE ELLEN and CLIFF have been seeing each other since the episode ELECTION and, as JR hints at the end, chances are that CLIFF can be the father of the baby that will be known as JOHN ROSS EWING III. From this episode on, the episodes´ serialization increases, though it won´t be total until next season.
This is the first episode entirely focused on RAY KREBBS. The character of GARNET McGEE had been previously offered to SUSAN HOWARD, to be cast as DONNA, though GARNET ended up being played by KATE MULGREW. The actress became very popular among the trekkies when she starred in STAR TREK VOYAGER. The scene in which JOCK gives RAY the deed of some lands in the Eastern area of SOUTHFORK was reminisced as a flashback in THE SEARCH too.
One of the least popular episodes on a fan level. Also one of the few guest starring a friend of BOBBY´s. Only “turncoat” MATT CANTRELL would follow this BENNETT´s steps. The actor who performed him, RICHARD KELTON, died shortly after the shooting.
This is not usually appearing at the favorite lists either. A routine wrong kidnap plot with kidnappers bad enough for the worst B series. Re-appearing LIBERTY GODSHALL as J.R.´s escort again.
First and only stint of MISS ELLIE´s brother, GARRISON SOUTHWORTH, a minor character in the prequel DALLAS: THE EARLY YEARS. GARRISON´s thumbstone will be seen in Season 10 episode “Things ain´t going so good at Southfork, again”. BARBARA BEL GEDDES had already worked with GARRISON´s performer, GENE EVANS, in one episode of the show SPENCER´S PILOTS.
Debut of SUE ELLEN´s mother and sister. MARTHA SCOTT plays PATRICIA in this episode and Seasons 2 & 8. COLLEEN CAMP only would play KRISTIN one more time, in the rightly entitled episode SUE ELLEN´S SISTER. For unknown reasons, she was replaced by MARY CROSBY on Season 2. Also first appearance of FERN FITZGERALD as MARILEE STONE, featured here just as one of the wives of the oil men in the EWINGS´ circle and fundraiser at D.O.A. with SUE ELLEN. This episode, one of best KATZMAN´s scripts, described one of SUE ELLEN´s many attempts to leaving JR.
Entrance of BOBBY´s loyal secretary CONNIE, played by JEANNA MICHAELS, after being incarnated by 2 other actresses. Returns JULIE GREY in an adult plot that would be rehashed years later with CLAYTON and LAUREL ELLIS´s storyline. This episode´s director, LES MARTINSON, also directed the first movie version of comic book BATMAN, based upon the TV show.
New double episode in this Season, and first one directed by LEONARD KATZMAN. Debut of another classic supporting character: corrupt cop McSween, who would be promoted all thru the years and eventually retired, making way for Ratagan. McSween´s performer, James L. Brown, also played the boyfriend of a then beginner called MARILYN MONROE in the movie FIREBALL. The last episode guest starring TINA LOUISE as JULIE, only killed off due to the plot twist, since both actress and producers were satisfied with her role in the show.
CLIFF´s arrest as JULIE´s presumed murderer and J.R.´s possible responsibility for it would lead to one of PAM and BOBBY´s separations, which remain apart for a few episodes.
New episode written by MARCHETTA, this time centered in KRISTIN´s character, here interested in BOBBY instead of in JR.
Guest appearance of VERONICA HAMEL as LEANNE, a former call-girl, now a model sharing her flat with PAM. Her popularity would increase not long after thanks to her starring role in HILL STREET BLUES. Plus debut of PAUL SORENSEN (ANDY BRADLEY), cameo of LARRY HAGMAN´s daughter, HEIDI, and entrance of LUCY´s gay boyfriend, KIT. At the end of the episode, PAM and BOBBY reconciled, to JR and SUE ELLEN despair, though the last scene´s mood is really comical.
One of the last self-contained episodes. Considered by CHARLENE TILTON as her favorite script, handles the homosexuality issue in a straightforward way, not presenting the man as the clichéd gay, but as a person with virtues and faults. Another story by CAMILLE MARCHETTA, whose insight of homosexuality on DYNASTY would be light-years away from this. The episode´s director is Swedish GUNNAR HELLSTROM, a good friend of HAGMAN´s, actor and director who guest starred in the AUGSBURG episodes as ROLF BRUNDIN.
A must-see episode, since it funds the basement for one of the most important couple relationships in the show. Likewise it features one of the most interesting female characters: DONNA CULVER, RAY´s future wife. JOHN McINTIRE plays her first husband, Senator CULVER, a former associate of JOCK´s who was also seen in the prequel.
Third two-parter of this Season, completely focused on SUE ELLEN and LUCY´s addiction to drinking and stimulants. First appearance of late SHERRIL LYNN KATZMAN, the producer´s daughter, playing PAM´s workmate at The Store and then CLIFF´s secretary through the end of the series. We can see actor PETER HORTON in a minor role, then married to MICHELLE PFEIFFER, as LUCY´s schoolmate and dealer, who would become popular as one of the stars in THIRTYSOMETHING a few years later.
First season-ending Cliffhanger and the highest-rated episode so far. Debuts LUCY´s practically only close friend, redheaded MURIEL, played by KARLENE CROCKETT. Another guest bit by LARRY HAGMAN´s daughter and ALAN RACHINS, to be famous as DOUGLAS BRACKMAN in L.A. LAW. Despite the suspenseful situations would be limited to those related with the JR-SE-CLIFF triangle and JOHN ROSS´s birth, this unusual ending at the time, made the viewers complain during Summer of 1979, especially about the newborn child´s future.
Season 1 of DALLAS is available on DVD through WARNER HOME...but not in Spain.
