25/54: "A HOUSE DIVIDED"
W: RENA DOWN
D: I.J. MOORE

The Asian fields nationalization news causes a commotion all over the town of DALLAS. During a press conference at EWING OIL, J.R. assures THEY ARE NOT RUINED. When BOBBY comes, JOCK and J.R. tell him that the latter had sold out almost every field to the Cartel and Banker LELAND. To worsen things, one of the Cartel members, SETH STONE, jumped off to death that morning.
His widow MARILEE keeps calling at the offices, but J.R. rejects the calls. JORDAN LEE and VAUGHN LELAND threat J.R. with a vengeance:
"Somehow you knew it, J.R. I´m gonna make you pay..." Once alone, BOBBY accuses J.R. of conning the Cartel, but he states: "I didn´t know, l swear it, daddy. I´d never do something like this to my friends..."

Meanwhile, ALAN shows KRISTIN the press headlines: "Ewing Empire Collapses". The pair begins to plot something to blackmail J.R. through his Asian connection.
At Southfork, BOBBY learns that PAM is gone to Corpus Christie searching for information about her mother. Shortly after, a SUE ELLEN with hangover promises BOBBY she´ll never have a drink again...
At Ewing Oil, J.R. discovers KRISTIN´s schemes. Unaware of all this, LUCY is dating one of her professors, GREG FORRESTER. So far it has been a platonic relationship, but she wants to change that. What she ignores is that FORRESTER has a wife and a baby.
SUE ELLEN confesses Dr. ELBY that she does not remember the previous day´s incident at the cowboy bar. The psychiatrist realizes that she relies on BOBBY rather than on herself. J.R. visits KRISTIN and suggests her to leave for Rio de Janeiro, but she replies: "One day, somebody´s gonna stop you and I hope I´m there to watch it. No way you can buy me off!"

At Corpus Christie, about 600 kms. away from DALLAS, PAM visits the house her family lived in decades ago. By chance she finds out that they left town shortly after she was born. Later on, she learns that REBECCA DID NOT die in C.C. and decides to return to DALLAS, sure that she still is alive.
That night, J.R. and SUE ELLEN start a verbal fight in which she feels she´s the winner, sure that BOBBY will help her. After suffering a new humiliation by J.R., she messes everything up there and finds in a drawer...J.R.´s gun.
Next day CLIFF tells the EWING brothers that an old document of DIGGER´s makes him their associate at the EWING 23. This field had been recently opened by BOBBY and has become very productive. But J.R. does not hesitate to order its immediate closing, before CLIFF´s angry look.

PAM only thinks of finding her mother even if she has to quit at The Store. ALAN is taken to J.R.´s office and accused of raping a minor...who does not really exist. At SOUTHFORK, BOBBY argues with JOCK and J.R. for EWING 23. Once alone, J.R. whispers: "BOBBY is weak, not like a real EWING, daddy." BOBBY has made his mind: " I've had all the wheelin' and dealin' and backstabin' I can take. We leave in the morning…"
Next morning, both JOCK and ELLIE try to talk him out of leaving but he is firmly determined to do it. SUE ELLEN, who has witnessed the scene, blames J.R. of everything: “You threw GARY away, tried to bribe VALENE, cheated your friends...Congratulations J.R. You are the only son of the EWINGS now.” His answer is a bombshell: "Think you enough said in this house, Sue Ellen. You´re a drunk and an unfit mother. The sooner we have you put away in that sanitarium, the better off you can be."

Sergeant McSween calls on KRISTIN´s apartment. He accuses her of prostitution and gives her 24 hours to quit town. "I´ll kill him...I swear I´ll kill him", she whispers. "Take a number - answers ALAN – are a few heads ahead of you."
VAUGHN phones J.R. to make him a last threat: "You´re gonna pay for this with your own life..." In SOUTHFORK, SUE ELLEN stares at the gun for a long time, picks it up and puts it into her purse...

At the cemetery, CLIFF talks to DIGGER´s thumbstone: "There is nothing left I can do, except stop J.R. for good.” At that moment, SUE ELLEN confesses Dr. ELBY: "You´ve been right all along: I can´t rely on anyone else to do what I have to do..."

Shortly after, J.R. gets a mysterious call at his office from someone who hangs off just after hearing his voice. A few minutes later, the elevator opens its doors, somebody slips into the office, checks if the secretaries are out and goes straight to J.R.´s office.
When J.R. hears a noise, comes out of his office to see who it is, but then, two gunshots let him unconscious on the ground, between life and death.

END OF SEASON 2

G.S.: DENNIS PATRICK, RON HAYES, CHRIS COFFEY, JAMES L. BROWN, JEFF COOPER, SUSAN KELLER, DON STARR and ANN NELSON as the Corpus Christie neighbor. AIRED ON 3/21/80.

TRIVIA DOSSIER
by Pam´s Twin Sister

30: First episode of the Season, divided in 2 parts. In the future this format would be followed at most season premieres, especially from Season 8 on. Replacement of the actor who played JEB AMES, ED NELSEN, by SANDY WARD in this two-parter. Debuts one of the show´s most faithful supporting characters, family lawyer HARV SMITHFIELD, performed by late GEORGE O. PETRIE, as well as the only remarkable new character: also lawyer ALAN BEAM, played by RANDOLPH POWELL, seen on the TV version of LOGAN´S RUN, a KATZMAN production too.

31: Conclusion of this double episode, solving out the kidnapping plot of J.R.´s heir, JOHN ROSS EWING III. First appearance of another recurring character, banker VAUGHN LELAND, who also would appear on Seasons 4, 6, and 7, portrayed by the same actor, deceased DENNIS PATRICK, famous for the gothic serial DARK SHADOWS. JORDAN CHARNEY plays another detective after gueststarring on THE RED FILES, but his former role SUTTON is played by another character...In a very minor role we can see JOCELYN BRANDO, MARLON´s sister, as JOHN ROSS´s nurse. Also debuts CLIFF´s small apartment that will remain until half Season 5. This was the first episode to be included in the Top Ten list.

32: Returns actress MARTHA SCOTT as PATRICIA on 2 more episodes. 2 members of the family are brought back with different actors: MARY CROSBY replaces COLLEEN CAMP as KRISTIN and so does KEENAN WYNN with DAVID WAYNE as a very different-looking DIGGER. The episode´s title, THE SILENT KILLER, could also make reference in prospect to both the BARNESES´ disease, neurofibromatosis, and KRISTIN herself, to become J.R. attempted murderer. The plot also unveals that REBECCA had suffered two miscarriages, one of them before to give birth to CLIFF and again before to have PAM, due to neurofibromatosis.

33: First of 16 episodes written, produced and directed by DALLAS´s guru LEONARD KATZMAN. DALLAS´s third stint of JOAN VAN ARK as VALENE. This time the conflict between her and daughter LUCY is worked out thanks to BOBBY. A clip scene of this episode was replayed as a flashback told by LUCY on episode THE COUNTRY GIRL from Season 11, written by the same writer, A.B. LEWIS.

34: KRISTIN is hired at EWING OIL, thus leaving her Architecture career (!?) and replacing just married LOUELLA, who will re-appear later on. Also begins the love affair between KRISTIN and J.R., one of the main storylines in this Season 2. The last episode of writer WORLEY THORNE, freelancer who had only written one more episode, RUNAWAY.

35: The shooting of the location scenes for this episode was when the crew started to notice JIM DAVIS´s illness, since he went through conscience and memory loss. About one year later, the actor would die of a brain tumor. The bar brawl scene would be reminisced on episode THE SEARCH. Also first mention of JOCK´s secret ex-wife AMANDA, committed into a sanitarium, although the revelation was about to be RAY´s true identity as JOCK´s son.

36: Enters SUE ELLEN´s shrink Dr. SIMON ELBY, played by Canadian JEFF COOPER, seen on the daytime soap THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS years before. Guest characters BO and LUKE were probably named after the ones starring on the show aired right before DALLAS at the CBS schedule, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD. The plot featured PAM´s second accidental abortion, leading to her depression phase. With this episode the show scored the Top 5 for the first time. BRUCE BROUGHTON received his first EMMY nomination as best music score composer in a drama series for his work for THE LOST CHILD.

37: First EWING charity rodeo which, despite of being ANNUAL, it would only be celebrated one more time, on episode # 200. Debuts STEVEN “DUSTY” FARLOW, who mistakenly claims to use her mother´s last name FARLOW, owner of the SOUTHERN CROSS Ranch, as WAYNE is his father´s (which actually is CLAYTON FARLOW). Ironically the plot twists will make his claim true since his real mother´s last name actually is FARLOW, as will be revealed on Season 6. Both names are a wink at KAZTMAN´s brother-in-law´s name, also belonging to the crew. Excerpts of the rodeo sequences will be used in one Season 4 episode, as home movies of DUSTY´s. JARED MARTIN had previously co-starred in other KATZMAN productions, like THE FANTASTIC JOURNEY and LOGAN´S RUN.

38: First appearance of LAURA JOHNSON as BETTY LOU BARKER, ALAN´s girlfriend, an actress who would become very popular thereafter playing golddigger TERRY HARTFORD RANSON CHANNING on FALCON CREST. First episode scripted by LORAINE DESPRES, who would also write for other LORIMAR shows: THE WALTONS, FAMILY or KNOTS LANDING, as well as DYNASTY. This episode was originally aired in USA after the two-parter MASTECTOMY.

39: Double episode focused on ELLIE´s breast cancer, aired as an one hour and a half episode in USA. A.B. LEWIS´s work that proved that a serial could feature more ambitious issues in a realistic way, so much that it provided BARBARA BEL GEDDES her only EMMY that year, as best actress in a drama series. The deceased actress had gone through the same problem in real life.

40: Part 2 of the previous, centered around the aftermath of ELLIE´s mastectomy and how it affects her family, especially JOCK and LUCY. This was one of the favorite stories of both BARBARA BEL GEDDES and CHARLENE TILTON, who considered this show “really pushed the envelope” in this kind of issues.

41: Another of the few episodes co-written by 2 writers. It was originally aired after THE HEIRESS. Enters late DON STARR, this time playing Oil Baron JORDAN LEE, member of the Cartel of Independent Companies of Dallas and regular supporting character almost through the end.

42: Last story of DAVID JACOBS for DALLAS (apart from THE EARLY YEARS) introduced GARY´s new performer, TED SHACKELFORD, and above all, launched its spin-off KNOTS LANDING. In the penultimate scene BOBBY and the newly married couple walk put of the house to become so popular all through the years. Enter old-timer western actor E.J. ANDRE as shipmaker Mr. EUGENE and wife SALLY BULLOCK, here played by ANDRA AKERS. Guest star TERRY LESTER (RUDY, KRISTIN´s ex-boyfriend), died in 2003, after devoting himself to music and acting in daytime soaps such as THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, SANTA BARBARA and AS THE WORLD TURNS. This episode was aired in USA after # 43, MOTHER OF THE YEAR, on Thursday night, instead of Friday´s, thus achieving a higher rating (nº 2) than the next day´s episode. Thursday night would belong to KNOTS LANDING during 14 years.

43: First of 32 episodes directed by LARRY HAGMAN. Conclusion of the storyline of SUE ELLEN´s emotional blockade as she finally accepts her son JOHN ROSS. Debuts JOAN LANCASTER as LINDA BRADLEY, the gossipy wife of Oil Baron ANDY and closer friend of MARILEE´s. This episode was aired in USA after ELLIE SAVES SOUTHFORK.

44: Returns SUSAN HOWARD as DONNA for 4 episodes. Debut of wasted TOM FUCCELLO as her son-in-law DAVE, of BARRY CORBIN (NORTHERN EXPOSURE) as Sheriff FENTON WASHBUN, and MEL FERRER, future PHILLIP ERIKSON on FALCON CREST, here playing PAM´s boss HARRISON PAGE. This episode was first aired the day after RETURN ENGAGEMENT so, unusually, there was a double dose of DALLAS that week. This episode´s director ALEXANDER SINGER, had already directed TV classics such as THE FIGITIVE, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, LOU GRANT, and would follow to HILL STREET BLUES, KL, FALCON CREST, REMINGTON STEELE and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, and had won an EMMY for his work in one episode of THE LAWYERS.

45: Enters STEPHANIE BLACKMORE as call-girl SERENA WALD, introduced by ALAN BEAM, but she would become J.R.´s confident and accomplice as years passed by. The only script written by JEFF YOUNG for DALLAS. From this episode on, KEENAN WYNN will be credited in the opening titles instead of the closing ones.

46: The final scene of this episode, in which J.R. eventually accepts JOHN ROSS as his own and holds him, is the favorite scene of many members of the DALLAS´s crew. Director HARRY HARRIS also directed episodes of a lot of shows like BONANZA, THE MAN FROM ATLANTIS, 8 IS ENOUGH, THE WALTONS, MAGNUM P.I., FALCON CREST, BEVERLY HILLS 90210, DR. QUINN MEDICINE WOMAN and FAME, which provided him an EMMY as best director in a drama series. JORDAN LEE´s wife is named SARA, though she will be mentioned as e EVELYN in the future.

47: Returns JENNA WADE, now with actress FRANCINE TACKER´s look. She co-starred in the show THE PAPER CHASE. Continuity error: the character says that her daughter CHARLIE has just left to ITALY with her daddy when Season 6 assumes she never met him. DON PORTER, the late actor playing ELLIE´s suitor, had co-starred with VICTORIA PRINCIPAL in the TV Movie LAST HOURS BEFORE MORNING and with LARRY HAGMAN in THE PRESIDENT´S MISTRESS.

48: One of the episodes audio-commented by L. GRAY and P. DUFFY for the DVD edition. This was CAMILLE MARCHETTA´s last script, thereafter she would be hired by the producers of DYNASTY and FALCON CREST. BOBBY and PAM´s mutual loyalty remained until their divorce by pressure from CBS, who wanted to feature the couple as a role model for the audiences.

49: First episode written by LINDA ELSTAD, deceased in 1997, who would keep working on the show for 3 more years. ELSTAD also wrote for 8 IS ENOUGH, FALCON CREST and FAME. Last appearance of LAURA JOHNSON and debut of CHRIS COFFEY as LUCY´s professor and lover-to-be GREG FORRESTER. Also seen in a very minor role is then husband of VICTORIA PRINCIPAL, CHRIS SKINNER, as one of LUCY´s Literature classmates, KETTERING. Their marriage lasted 20 months. This episode reached Top of the ratings for the very first (and not last) time.

50: Appears the only true EWING in the show´s cast: JOHN CHRISTY EWING. Another episode topping the audience ratings.

51: First part of a double episode which, originally, was meant to end this second Season of DALLAS. New mention of the FARLOW family (though the wife had been dead for 20 years) and their SOUTHERN CROSS Ranch.

52: Last episode with DIGGER BARNES and debut of STEPHEN ELLIOTT (ANGELA´s first husband on FALCON CREST) as prestige lawyer SCOTTY DEMEREST, who would re-appear on Seasons 7 and 9. His real-life wife ALICE HIRSON would play MAVIS ANDERSON from Season 5 on. In the flashback B/W scenes, VICTORIA plays PAM´s mother REBECCA, later portrayed by PRISCILLA POINTER. The decision came from a shy suggestion from VICTORIA herself. Also is revealed that ELLIE´s father was named AARON, just like DAVID JACOBS´ son. DIGGER´s funeral was going to be the end of the Season but, fortunately, CBS asked for two more episodes at the last minute and thus came out the plot about J.R.´s shooting.

53: The only but excellent script written by BARBARA SEARLES. First appearance of JOCK´s ex-wife AMANDA, here played by LESLEY WOODS. Other two actresses will incarnate her again on Season 7 and prequel THE EARLY YEARS. In the bar brawl scene you can see actor GEOFFREY SCOTT (MARK JENNINGS on DYNASTY) as the cowboy SUE ELLEN mistakes with DUSTY. ED KENNEY plays for first and only time Oil Baron SETH STONE, MARILEE´s suicide husband in the last episode of the Season. The story sets year 1939 as the buying date of field EWING 23, however DIGGER and JOCK had become enemies already in 1934 upon TEY.

54: The most popular episode ever of DALLAS, nº 1 at the ratings, whose end features J.R. getting shot. Written by RENA DOWN, the writing team started off from the shooting scene to build up the previous ones, without thinking who might be the attempted murderer. In a one-scene role (as the former neighbor PAM meets in CORPUS CHRISTIE) we see ANN NELSON, popular for her brief stints in the “Airplane!” movies, on KNOTS LANDING and, above all, as the school clerk on the FAME series, Mrs. BERG. For this episode editor FRED W. BERGER received a nomination for the EDDIE Award for best editing in a TV series. The scene of BOBBY´s goodbye is PATRICK DUFFY´s favorite one, of all he played with BARBARA BEL GEDDES.
