(From this season on, credited in the main titles is SUSAN HOWARD as DONNA, in the place formerly filled by JIM DAVIS. The only guest star remaining through the 26 episodes is LEIGH McCLOSKEY as MITCH and, thru the first 10, JARED MARTIN playing STEVEN DUSTY FARLOW.
1/78: "MISSING HEIR" W: LEONARD KATZMAN D: I.J. MOORE
KRISTIN has been found dead by CLIFF in the SOUTHFORK pool. He and J.R. accuse each other of her murder. BOBBY learns that PAM drove JOHN ROSS to SUE ELLEN, without giving explanations to anyone. LUCY returns home feeling she has sunk her marriage. Finally, the sheriff must take J.R. to the station, in order to question him about KRISTIN´s death: he tells that he was about to leave to ABILENE in search of PAM and JOHN ROSS, when he saw CLIFF drowning KRISTIN in the pool. However, she ignores how the balcony railing was broken.
The next morning, both men are released and CLIFF goes to his mother´s. Then McSWEEN reports J.R. about JOHN ROSS, who was picked up at a motel in ABILENE by someone who got on a car registered to STEVEN FARLOW, and he was driven to the SOUTHERN CROSS Ranch, in SAN ANGELO.
At the same time, BOBBY goes for PAM at the motel and she tells him that she took JOHN ROSS away from the ranch because he ought to be with his mother. DONNA returns from WASHINGTON and RAY calms her down about the money transfer he has made for investing on the LUBBOCK business. Later on, BOBBY and DONNA go out for a ride and he reveals his fears of PAM being obsessed with the idea of having a baby. DONNA hints she should get professional help. She also tells BOBBY her worries about RAY´s new facet as a business man. Finally J.R. arrives at SOUTHERN CROSS with the sheriff of SAN ANGELO claims he wants his son back. CLAYTON FARLOW meets them, and after him, come DUSTY and SUE ELLEN, who says: “This time the child stays with me J.R. I´ve filed you for a divorce.”
In private, J.R. reports SUE ELLEN about KRISTIN´s death, and she immediately suspects of her husband. J.R. also tries to persuade her to get back with him, since KRISTIN´s baby might not even exist. But she stays firm and says she loves DUSTY. Back to DALLAS, MITCH calls on his sister at the club where she acts and AFTON advices him that, if he wants to make up with LUCY, he would better find a quick way of making money and forget his ideals. Once at the ranch, BOBBY and DONNA witness a fight between J.R. and PAM: "...I suppose that's to be expected from the illegitimate child of a ranch foreman and the stepdaughter of the town drunk." – he attacks.
At EWING OIL, he meets the divorcist lawyer who will take his case, HOWARD BARKER. BOBBY makes an appointment with CLIFF and they argue about the Senate Hearing matter. CLIFF thinks that BOBBY provided his brother the confidential information, but he answers that, due to his unethical methods and his obsession about vengeance, he will never be able to work on politics again. SUE ELLEN insists on her wanting marry DUSTY and live with him at his ranch. LUCY comes back to SOUTHFORK, after making apart from MITCH, and she feels she has ruined her marriage. While J.R. is speaking with his lawyer, sheriff WASHBURN comes and gives them bad news: the assistant district attorney has stated that, as KRISTIN shot him, J.R. had the best motive for wanting Kristin dead...

The judge´s verdict is shocking: as a consequence of her drug using, the young woman walked through the railing and straight off the balcony...knocking herself out, so she immediately got drown. J.R. has more urgent problems, like getting his son´s custody. SUE ELLEN´s flight to attend her sister´s funeral is the perfect opportunity for J.R. to try to get back his son...

BOBBY and PAM decide to start the legalities to adopt a baby. REBECCA puts CLIFF at charge of her husband´s first company, Wentworth Tool And Dye, so she can stop him from quitting DALLAS... Meanwhile MITCH celebrates his graduation as a doctor with his sister AFTON, as RAY is becoming an expert businessman, thus upsetting his wife DONNA. J.R. tries his best to take his son away from S. CROSS, even if he has to cheat his mother. He talks her into letting her accompany her to S. ANGELO so he will can use her to take the child away. “He may belong at Southfork, but not this way, J.R.!” - claims an outraged ELLIE.

J.R. tries to discredit SUE ELLEN and stop her from getting JOHN ROSS´s temporary custody. Meanwhile, BOBBY is doing his best to adopt a child, since PAM´s balance is more and more fragile and she needs medical help. REBECCA welcomes her daughter KATHERINE, visiting from NEW YORK, who wants to meet her new family. At the hearing for custody, J.R. believes himself the winner until her wife´s lawyer proves that SUE ELLEN has decided to share her life with DUSTY out of love, not for carnal reasons, since she will never can have sex or children with him...

J.R. uses all his power to make the FARLOWS stop protecting SUE ELLEN and JOHN ROSS. Therefore he thinks that the relationship between his wife and DUSTY will resent.
BOBBY, on the other side, has problems of his own: PAM is emotionally disturbed, and tries to kill herself jumping off a roof of a building in DALLAS. Besides, he receives a photograph of KRISTIN holding her newborn baby. MITCH takes a job at a plastic surgery clinic as a way of getting back LUCY. Afraid of PAM attempting suicide again, BOBBY makes an important decision: he agrees with her to check her into the BROOKTREE mental hospital...

The FARLOWS strongly protect SUE ELLEN and son, and J.R. tries to get even on them: he gets a loan for E. OIL from a financial group, headed by VAUGHN LELAND, in order to cut off the oil provided to the Farlow Refineries. BOBBY buys information about KRISTIN´s baby from her last lover JEFF FARRADAY. PAM meets her sister-in-law at BROOKTREE, where Dr. CONRAD is her therapist. PUNK ANDERSON must quit the business deal shared with RAY. VAUGHN conspires at J.R.´s back to get his own revenge, using a humiliated AFTON, who contacts him with CLIFF...

J.R. is desperate to see that his efforts to make SUE ELLEN leave S. CROSS are unsuccessful. On the contrary, SUE ELLEN faces her still husband and confirms her suspicions about his responsibility for the FARLOWS´ oil blocking.
As PAM struggles to overcome her depression, BOBBY keeps searching on the true identity of KRISTIN´s baby. Although he seemed to have conclusive proofs, he finds out that JORDAN LEE was not the baby´s father. LUCY is happy to know that MITCH is going to work at DALLAS. J.R.´s blackmail to CLAYTON does not work out, so E. OIL is being jeopardized... “Better men have tried to break me – says CLAYTON – When your daddy gets back from SOUTH AMERICA, there might not be a EWING OIL...”

Through a letter sent from SOUTH AMERICA, JOCK remarkably changes the family relationship and the future of E. OIL. He splits the company between J.R., BOBBY, ELLIE, GARY, RAY and JOHN ROSS. As J.R.´s power is seriously diminished, he will see his difficult financial situation get even worse. BOBBY declines to be re-elected for the Senate and PAM is slowly regaining her emotional stability. CLIFF makes an alliance with VAUGHN in his struggle to ruin J.R. The latter meets DUSTY at the DALLAS COWBOYS Stadium and starts a dialectic fight with him: "Your daddy is the only man in S. Cross", J.R. mocks.

J.R. schemes to get the maximum number of shares and increase his power within the company. However he will meet GARY´s and RAY´s opposition. RAY must also face a serious business trouble. Meanwhile, BOBBY agrees with FARRADAY to pay him 25.000 dollars for KRISTIN´s baby. Dr. CONRAD allows PAM to spend a few days at SOUTHFORK. DUSTY is back to his former cowboy life in spite of SUE ELLEN´s complaints... CLIFF obliges J.R. to sign an extension of the loan he asked for blocking the FARLOW Refineries. He also takes advantage of that to demand him the deed of the field that ended JOCK and DIGGER´s friendship, EWING 6. "You´re a dead man, J.R., and I´m the head pallbearer", says CLIFF...

ELLIE realizes that her eldest son is an irresponsible man so obsessed with ruining the FARLOWS that he has led E. OIL to a bankrupt situation. BOBBY is shocked to know that J.R. is the father of KRISTIN´s baby. PAM does not listen to her doctor´s advices and decides to check out of the sanitarium for good, certain that all she needs is a baby.
SUE ELLEN decides to leave S. CROSS to let DUSTY go back to the rodeos and not to worry about his only flaw... When BOBBY brings KRISTIN´s baby to the ranch, PAM mistakenly thinks that he has adopted a baby... "We have a baby! Oh, BOBBY, you got a baby to adopt..."

ELLIE gathers the family to decide if his son should stay as the company´s President. "You are a cold and insensitive man, J.R. Until your daddy comes back, it´s over for you to do what you want with E. OIL." After learning about the revenge plotted against CLAYTON, she goes to his ranch and tries to fix the situation. She also meets CLIFF and the Cartel: "We may be wrong, we may be right, but we're Ewings, and we stick together. That's what makes us unbeatable!" J.R. schemes a plan to get back his son´s legal custody, now that SUE ELLEN is not under the FARLOWS´ protection any more: "I got witnesses and statements to prove that you´re a drunk, a slut and an unfit mother." BOBBY is beginning to realize the problems he and PAM will have to overcome in order to adopt KRISTIN´s baby, CHRISTOPHER... DONNA gets angry to know that RAY has not trusted her. The divorce hearing´s day, J.R. loses again when MISS ELLIE shows up...

ELLIE plans the EWING annual barbecue to coincide with JOCK´s expected return to SOUTHFORK. During the barbecue, CLIFF and SUE ELLEN are attracted to each other again as J.R. realizes that he still wants his ex-wife.
LUCY gets disappointed when MITCH must suddenly leave. DONNA looks uncomfortable with RAY getting drunk. KATHERINE comes back from N.Y. and begins to feel attracted to BOBBY. But a mysterious phone call will change ELLIE´s expression: JOCK has disappeared in an air crash... "He was flying in by helicopter...it crashed. The locals have given up searching: they say that JOCK is dead...!"

Once there, they meet a man who survived the accident...and learn that JOCK´s helicopter collided with a plane and eventually fell into a lake. Meanwhile, the EWING women reminisce about the past facts in which the patriarch had a decisive intervention... BOBBY and RAY dive below the waters and find the evidence that his father was one of the passengers: JOCK´s medallion...

In the meantime, the rest of the family is surprised to see ELLIE´s apparent calm...though BOBBY realizes she actually denies reality: "As long as I believe he´s alive, he´s alive..."

SUE ELLEN is accused by her school friend DEE DEE WEBSTER of trying to steal her husband away. BOBBY and ELLIE join forces to make J.R. overcome his breakdown... "Someday you might want to tell John Ross what his granddaddy spent his life building – tells him as he puts his brother in front of the mirror - How are you going to do that, JR?"

SUE ELLEN is trying to keep her emotional balance in her relationships with CLAYTON and CLIFF. The latter finds a job for AFTON as a nightclub singer. Meanwhile, RAY keeps arguing with ELLIE and BOBBY. On the other side, J.R. discovers that JOCK´s testament may split EWING OIL even more. He agrees with his mother to postpone the will´s reading. LUCY´s photographer, ROGER, begins to follow her steps... BOBBY turns to a lawyer friend and must tell PAM a fake story about CHRISTOPHER´s natural parents... In front of his daddy´s portrait, J.R. feels recovered: "I´m back, daddy. I promise I´ll make E. OIL the biggest company in Texas, to leave it to my son..."

J.R. schemes a plot to ruin his rival and even tries to turn AFTON against him. LUCY wrongly believes that her husband is having an affair with one of his patients and, to get even, she seeks ROGER´s company. BOBBY wants PAM to work again, as he tries to speed CHRISTOPHER´s adoption. J.R. spends the whole day with JOHN ROSS, so he might regain his ex-wife´s confidence...

SUE ELLEN is very surprised when J.R. congratulates her in the anniversary of their first meeting and gives her a tape of the Miss Texas contest that she won. They celebrate it spending the night together...

J.R. keeps overcaring SUE ELLEN all the time, and she decides to accept his invitation for dinner at SOUTHFORK. At the same time J.R. is pressing RAY, who has more and more problems with DONNA. Taking advantage of this situation, J.R. will make him to give upon his E. OIL share.
BOBBY and PAM are very happy with the baby they have adopted. LUCY is trying to reason with ROGER, but he intends to continue their affair. CLIFF eventually discovers J.R.´s intentions and makes him a promise: he will not only avoid his tricks, but he will also marry SUE ELLEN...

He also learns that SUE ELLEN keeps dating CLIFF, so he plans to destroy him once and for all: “There will be no more CLIFF BARNES in DALLAS. You will cease to exist, and that´s a promise.”
CLAYTON warns SUE ELLEN about it and advices her not to flirt with CLIFF. LUCY ends up turning to ROGER´s obsessive love... BOBBY begins to worry about his and PAM´s future happiness when JEFF FARRADAY returns and demands him more money...

Thanks to a remark from KATHERINE, J.R. adopts a new strategy with CLIFF. With MARILEE STONE´s help, he sets up a plot to destroy him. In high spirits for his last victory over J.R., CLIFF asks REBECCA for a bigger autonomy at WENTWORTH. SUE ELLEN and CLIFF´s relationship affects AFTON, J.R. and CLAYTON differently. PAM has a serious talk with ROGER and warns him to keep away from LUCY. While searching for her new book about SAM CULVER, DONNA casually discovers some unknown facts about JOCK and asks a recovered RAY for help...

MARILEE will be the one to perform J.R.´s trap for CLIFF. Thinking he has a big deal in hands, CLIFF takes 4 million dollars from his mother´s company and invest them on worthless land. But J.R.´s plans go further since he wants to ruin his affair with SUE ELLEN too. LUCY leaves SOUTHFORK hoping to reconcile with MITCH, but he asks her for a divorce instead...To make things worse, she is kidnapped by ROGER... BOBBY is being blackmailed by FARRADAY. RAY suggests DONNA to talk with MISS ELLIE before to publish her book, so they can confirm the information she found about the beginning of the EWING fortune.

BOBBY´s fears seem to vanish when blackmailer FARRADAY is murdered. However, a more dangerous blackmailer takes his place: J.R. Checking out a copy of CHRISTOPHER´s adoption papers, J.R. realizes that he probably is the baby´s real father. Therefore he can make BOBBY do whatever he wants to, under the threat of telling PAM the whole truth: “I´m delighted that you´re adopting my son. I know that you and PAM love the boy, and he turned her life round. I don´t mind his calling me Uncle J.R.” ELLIE and DONNA have a serious argument because of her discovery about JOCK and SAM CULVER: it proves that, in order to drill their first fields, the patriarch and his partner committed a kin of CULVER´s into an asylum. Before they could take him out, the old man killed himself...

BOBBY must face big trouble when he is questioned by the police about his connection to late FARRADAY. LUCY is set free when PAM and BOBBY find her gagged and tied at ROGER´s studio. DONNA does not know what to do to reconcile with ELLIE, who seems to have her late husband on a pedestal. LUCY agrees with MITCH to get divorced and thus putting an end to her marriage... CLIFF realizes his situation is leading him to total bankrupt and tries to get a loan from SUE ELLEN. But she feels used and breaks up with him, as J.R. expected. “You are a Ewing – he tells her - and you belong with people that you can trust. You must come back to Southfork - and me...”

J.R. is in top form: CLIFF is broke; CLAYTON does not know what he really feels about SUE ELLEN; she ends up accepting his attentions and BOBBY is being hounded by the police.
On the other hand, CLIFF is desperate because of his mother´s request to resign of his charge at WENTWORTH, for his misusing the company´s capital. AFTON wants to convince him that they can face J.R. together. BOBBY feels intimidated by his brother and the policemen working on FARRADAY´s case, though he was murdered by drug dealers. RAY tries his best to soften the tight situation between DONNA and ELLIE. Finally, ELLIE will accept JOCK´s death during a family dinner, and, alone in the kitchen, she goes through a rampage and breaks everything she sees...Afterwards, she goes at RAY´s and she confides the couple: "I know that Jock's not coming back, but I have my memories of him, and my memories are forever."

26/103: "GOOD-BYE, CLIFF BARNES" W: A.B. LEWIS D: I.J. MOORE
BOBBY and PAM have to fly to L.A. so they can know the truth about CHRISTOPHER´s father. J.R. puts an end to his affair with MARILEE allegedly to have "a strictly monogamous life", which irates the woman. When BOBBY explains PAM the truth about FARRADAY, she feels hurt: "You lied me a lot. You brought the baby home for J.R., not me. But CHRISTOPHER belongs to us, we are his parents, not J.R. He wanted to use his own child to get your E. OIL shares. I´d fight him to death rather than give him the baby back..." MARILEE is feeling guilty and tells CLIFF that J.R. used her against him...CLIFF rejects MARILEE´s and AFTON´s help...At L.A., BOBBY and PAM find out that KRISTIN miscarried J.R.´s baby shortly after leaving DALLAS. However she got pregnant again with JEFF´s baby and gave him birth prematurely.
At SOUTHFORK, LUCY confides MURIEL that ROGER raped her when she tried to escape...SUE ELLEN meets CLAYTON to tell him she has accepted J.R.´s marriage proposal. But she ignores that CLAYTON had decided to ask her to marry him and even was going to give her an engagement ring... "Don´t make a mistake, SUE ELLEN. There might be someone who cared about you much more than him..." AFTON watches CLIFF sinking more and more, while she cannot do anything to stop it. CLIFF goes to SUE ELLEN´s and begs her to help him: "I need you, I know that I can start over if you believe in me and love me..." When she tells him about her marriage plans to J.R., CLIFF leaves depressed...
Meanwhile, at L.A. BOBBY and PAM learn that KRISTIN wed JEFF and he kept blackmailing J.R and JORDAN when she died...As JEFF´s blood belongs to the same group than J.R.´s, they could continue their blackmail with impunity. An angry BOBBY assures his wife: "My own brother tried to blackmail me. When we´re back to DALLAS, I´m gonna vote to throw him out of E. OIL but not until I take him apart..." At DALLAS, AFTON finds CLIFF´s unconscious body, next to empty bottles of alcohol and tranquillisers...
CLIFF is rushed to hospital, where AFTON and a guilty REBECCA come along. The doctor reports them that CLIFF has entered in a comma due to an overdose of alcohol and pills. If he gets to come out of ICU, next 24 hours will be critical...
REBECCA comes at SOUTHFORK and tells the news to the EWINGS, blaming J.R and SUE ELLEN for everything: "The feud between our families still goes on. I swear I´ll destroy the EWINGS and I have the money to do it..." When REBECCA leaves, ELLIE guesses she has told the truth: "I'm gonna remove you as president of Ewing Oil as soon as Bobby gets back!" "You don't know it yet, but you can't do that, mama."
At the hospital, SUE ELLEN visits CLIFF, still in a comma, followed by J.R. "Look what we have done to him...I am the one to blame. If Cliff dies, I may never be able to marry you, J.R.”
SUE ELLEN´s words are like a bombshell to J.R., afraid that, if he dies, CLIFF will get his final victory, keeping him forever apart from SUE ELLEN, family and what he wishes most: absolute control of EWING OIL...
