In June 1962 the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, signed Gerry & The Pacemakers. "Brian was great as both a manager and a person" said Gerry "He helped us enormously". Later that year EMI's George Martin saw Gerry & The Pacemakers at a gig in Birkenhead and signed them to EMI Columbia, at the same time offering to produce their records.
"We rocked up "Pretend" for our first LP" says Gerry "And it’s still in our act. Mitch Murray wrote 'How Do You Do It' and it was originally offered to The Beatles. John Lennon didn’t like it so they rejected it. It was our first single and it got to No. 1 for 3 weeks selling 1/2 million copies. I rang John to point out we were top of the charts with a record he had rejected, but I can’t tell you what he said!"
