Fencing History:

Jennyfer "Jenny" Lobato was 17 years of age in Dec. 2000 when school-mate Anylu Cruz invited her to come to one of her saber fencing classes.  Having never seen the sport before, Jenny was intrigued and agreed to go.  Jenny, an avid tennis player (her father Rafael is one of the top tennis players town), immediately liked what she saw and tried a few moves with coach Charles Randall. Jenny continued her tennis lessons but started coming more and more to the free classes offered by Randall. Eventually by summer of 2001 she quit taking tennis lessons and devoted her time to fencing and high school. Jenny, a top student in her school took to not the just physical but to the mental aspects of the sport.

Jenny's first competition was in Jan. 2002 where she placed an impressive #9 Nationally and #4 State in Juniors and in Div. 1 #16 Nationally, #8 State. The pretty and petite fencer with the gorgeous smile became the first fencer from Puerto Vallarta to win an individual gold medal when she and teammates Ariana Aranda (silver) and Nadia Rodriguez (bronze) swept the first Div. 2 summer nationals in July 2002. She also finished high school and entered into college that same month. The huge change in her life temporarily shifted her focus as she adjusted to college and a new schedule.  By the end of Jan. 2003 Lobato had adjusted to her new school and it started showing in her results. By the end of March she had earned her place on the State of Jalisco's Jr. Olympic team where she won an individual bronze medal and the silver team medal in the 2 person team event with Estella Lomeli of Guadalajara.

August 2003 took Jenny to San Diego, California, USA for her first international competition, the San Diego Jr. Competition, an official USFA event. There Jenny won her first International medal, the individual bronze medal for Women's saber.

Feb. 2004 - Jenny wins the silver medal in the crucial 3rd National Jrs. Tournament, then the following week wins her first Div. 1 medal, taking the bronze at the 3rd Div. 1 Nationals.

July 2004 - Tijuana, BCN - Jr. Olympics - Jenny wins the individual bronze.

Sep. 2004 - Jenny wins her second individual GOLD medal at the Div.2 Nationals in Mexico City.

Oct. 2004 - Jenny wins the SILVER medal at the tough Long Beach Invitational tournament

Jan.  2005 - Jenny wins her first silver medal in the Div.1 nationals. Congratulations Jenny!

May 2005 - Jenny wins the gold medal at the Div. 1 nationals and becomes the #1 ranked fencer in Mexico.

Sept. 2005 - Bronze at the 3rd Div. 1 nationals, this wins confirms Jenny onto the Mexico National Team.

Studying to be a mechanical engineer, Jenny is the only female student in her field in her college and has some of the toughest classes to be had. "In her first year, she finished top of her class, showing her incredible intelligence and diligence, the same traits she exhibits in her fencing" says proud Coach Charles Randall. "She is a pleasure to teach as she is very serious,  mentally flexible and immediately tries to incorporate new techniques in her fencing, and more importantly she is completely self-motivated. We all know talent will only take you so far, but its constancy that makes all the difference in the world and Jenny has that gift (among her many others including talent) in spades. Her other shining quality is that she is a team player and thinks about others. She is 100% there in spirit and body, even for our epee counter-parts, cheering them on and offering support.. She is actually a dream student I am fortunate to be her coach" continued Randall.
