Fencing History:

17 year old Jorge de la Torre first came to watch class in June 2002, invited by school friend Ariana Aranda. Immediately interested, he returned the next evening to start classes and hasn't look back since. Jorge, a hard-worker, found a passion in his heart for the sport, even discontinuing soccer to focus on fencing. He came to class 6 days a week and when school was out came to private classes 3-4 times a week in addition to the evening group classes.  In his first competition, (Sept 2002) he beat Aquiles Rios, ranked #5 in Mexico in Div.1 and #1 in Div. 2, in a clear victory of 5-0 during the pools.

In Jan. 2004, Jorge finally broke the barrier with an astounding win for his first medal. He was the only Jr. to make it to the final round of 8 in the Div. 1 Nationals, and did not know that he had made the medal round in the Jrs. category (Jrs. and Div. bout together). Coach Charles Randall immediately knew, and when the DE's came, Jorge beat his brother Hector in is first DE, then onto Martel of Yucatan to take the silver medal. Both Jorge and Charles were ecstatic. "That medal was extremely sweet. Our first men's saber medal, and believe me, it was well-deserved. Jorge has worked incredibly hard to get where he is in a relatively short time, and the men's saber category is really tough" said Coach Randall. "My goal was to make the state team for the Jr. Olympics and I did it in 2004" said Jorge.

August 2004 took Jorge to the San Diego Jr. Invitational where he won the bronze medal. This was Jorge's second time participating in this tournament. On this trip the team enjoyed training and working with the Spartak Saber Club the day after the tournament.

Sept. 2004 - Jorge wins the bronze medal at the Div. 2 Mexico Nationals in Mexico City.

Oct. 2004 - In his biggest competition to date, Jorge wins his 2nd International medal at the Long Beach Invitational tournament, placing #7.

Jorge is extremely athletic with strong legs, and a can-do attitude. In 2003 he graduated from high school in the top of his class, entered the University of Guadalajara's Puerto Vallarta campus and is a full time university student now. "He has tremendous speed, which he is learning to use more effectively, with his potential,  if he can organize his time well to stay focused and continue training smart, he will continue to improve and see his fencing level rise. He is very bright, competitive, and has a true passion for the sport. He and I really go at it when we bout together, he is a very aggressive fencer,  I love to fence with him" says coach Randall.

His natural helpful attitude has led Coach Randall to start teaching Jorge how to become an assistant coach. Jorge now does some parts of the youth saber training under the close supervision of Charles.
