Internal combustion engines will perhaps go through impressive
changes in the near future; as it has been said, more so in the
next 10 years than in the past century. Unfortunately, the future
didn't make itself present at the show, only some marvels of the
present did.
GM
Close up view of the variable phase intake camshaft.
Cross-section view where it is possible to notice its racing-style
details, such as dry sump and wet cylinder sleeves.
The NorthStar-derived engine, but with a smaller displacement. The current all-time wining engine at Formula Indy was based on it.
The horizontal configuration lends itself to a very smooth
and short engine, as is the case of this beatifully designed
Subaru engine. Also of notice, its dual stage intake
resonance system.
VW
By far the weirdest V8 ever. Although compact, it requires
exotic materials to keep its weight down. Notice the two
balance shafts below the cranckshaft and that the pistons
heads and intake manifold length are not the same for all
cylinders: those in the inner cylinders are rather different
from those in the outer ones.
