The Explorer Post 854 originally started in 1995 with only 5 people. Today the post consists of 27 students from Girard, Lake City, Springfield, and Fairview townships.  These exceptional students take the time to volunteer their Tuesday nights every week to come into the Fire Station and learn about firefighting and other things associated with the profession of fire fighting.  These teens, between the ages of 14 to 21, train their way into adult firefighters, and some of them, in fact, most of them, have had some form of EMS or First Responder training on top of that.  Many of these junior firefighters have been on calls of one type or another and are ready to face fire. These are the volunteer firefighters of the future.

Ninety percent of these teens have basic fireman's training and again 90 % of these teens have first responders training.  Most of the explorers will be taking EMT training in the upcoming months, as well as HAZ-MAT training.

Part of taking this training is also coming up with the money to pay for the classes. The Explorers take part in many fund rasiers throughout the year to help earn this needed money.
