In 1254 Henry III handed over Peveril Castle to Edward along with many others. Almost immediately however it was transferred to Eleanor of Castille as part of her dowry. After the battle of Lewes, Peveril Castle was regarded as important enough to be one of those demanded from the king by Simon de Montfort. With Simon's defeat and death at Evesham it reverted to Edward. Peveril Castle is in the care of English Heritage. It lies on the south side of Castleton, 15 miles west of Sheffield on the A625 and is open throughout the year.
